3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
As the title says, my camry is stalling out when I slow down for a turn or when I stop. It happens mostly after the engine has reached a normal operating temp. The motor begins to idle erratically falling below 900-400 RPM and then dies, this causes the engine to vibrate a lot. Temp gauge appears to be normal throughout all driving. I can drive the car but I have to use both feet or e-brake, neutral, and apply the gas to keep the revs at 1000 RPM, not fun when having to do left turns. After the engine dies, sometimes it struggles to start back up, I have to then apply the gas and crank at the same time.
Things I have done:
Tune up - cleaned throttle body/IAC valve, sea-foam, new spark plugs, distributor - from salvage yard, new cap and rotor, new ignition wires. CEL is on, but code is for E-solenoid transmission which I think has no effect on this particular problem. No audible air/vac leaks in the engine bay.
Things I am considering looking at:
Ignition coil, ECT sensor, EGR valve (seems like a big PIA to replace)
At the moment I am trying to trace the hoses for the VSV, charcoal canister, TVV, and EGR. Except that I don't have a schematic for how these lines should go. I tried referencing the 92-96 factory repair manual online but it seems the 5sfe information is more for a 92-95 and not a 96, reason being it seems my water housing is missing the outlet for the TVV (connecter on the right with 2 vac hoses), my throttle body only has 2 vac line connections that connect with the EGR, and my charcoal canister (or what I believe it is) looks like a plastic box, instead of the metal cylindrical container I am used to seeing. If someone with a 96 camry or knowledge of one could help verify these hose connections and subtle differences please share. Or if anyone has other troubleshooting ideas please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Did you take out the IACV valve to clean it or did you just left it on while squirting the cleaner into it?
left it attached to the TB and just sprayed a bunch of cleaner into it. i followed some TB cleaning guide on here and it mentioned nothing about disassembling it off and cleaning. if it will make a difference i might try this when i get a chance.

It's funny how people have the same exact issue as you. The same thing happened to me the other day. The car came to a stop on the highway (face palm). I tried to start it again but the oil pan light came it. I gave it a few mins and it stared again but barely did had to give it the crank and gas. Finally got to a Gas station come to see the car had no oil at all so I filled it with oil and the oil light went away. This was about a month ago btw. BUT I thought that would be the last of that issue but now the car now idles funny and sometimes idle very low 400rpm or so, the car will vibrate a little but it wont shut off but then the needle goes right back up to normal idle. It does this on and off. Sometimes it will be good and it wont happen at all but it bother me. I asked my mechanic and he said it could be a transmission problem...I really hope not. I'm going in to get a diagnostic test.
