4th Generation Is there an O/D Indicator Light? 98 Camry LE

For fear of getting flaming responses...YES, I have searched the forum, and can't find the answer I'm looking for. If there is a thread that answers this question, please point me to it.

Question: Is there an Overdrive Off indicator light somewhere on the dash/instrument panel?

I recently purchased this "J" VIN 98 Camry LE, very basic car with not many options, no ECT switch (that I can find). I'm wondering if the O/D indicator light is burnt out, or if it just doesn't exist. All other idiot lights/gear indicators/dash lights/dome lights seem to work just fine.

Doesn't make sense to me that there would not be an O/D indicator of some sort (other than the gearshift button sticking out).

PS: Since I'm obvously challenged, A picture is worth 1,000 words...if this O/D indicator exists, please post a photo of it in action.

Respectfully submitted.

There is a O/D light on the 4th gen Camry. I'll wait for those who have pictures to post pictures.

Do you have the owners manual for this car? It would mention it there.

Yes, I have the owners manual, but did not see a graphical listing of idiot lights and where they are positioned. There is no mention of an O/D indicator light in the manual. The manual is generic for the model and states how to use O/D, and covers many things such as how to use the ECT PWR function (which is not on this particular car). Knowing that the manual needs to cover all options, this did not surprise me.

I know there is someone on this forum who will have a picture of their dash with the O/D OFF indicator showing...

yeah there is a light on dashboard indicating (amber color) O/D turned off, but i don't remember where it sits exactly and what it says ... if you wait a few hours i can take a pic after work. though my car is Camry Solara, so dash might be a tad different, however instrument cluster behind it should be same.

ok took some pics

sorry about the quality i took these with my camera phone

1. picture with O/D on

2. picture with O/D off

3. to check the connection underneath pull up on the trim around the shifter

4. just pic of O/D switch

5. picture of the underside of the trim showing the locations of the clips

6. the light connection is the plug connector on the right side. u press down on it and slide it out, i didn't know if maybe the connector wasn't plugged in

7. picture of the connector pulled out

8. overall picture of instrument cluster with O/D off so you can see the location, also you need to remove the two philips screws at the top

9. clip located on left side

10. clip located on right side too

11. - 14. locations of screws

15. after u unscrew the 4 scews when you pull the cluster out, you'll see 3 connectors a blue white and brown plugs theres clips on the top and you just push down and kinda of wiggle them out

16. backside of the cluster

17. the O/D bulb location is the top missing one in this pic (as i found out when i first took all this out theres two spots, in my case anyways for traction control)

18. picture of backside of O/D spot held in the light so u can see it from behind

19. - 22. just pictures of the connectors and where they go, each connector can only go in one spot but don't force it

Thumbs up A Million Thanks!!!

Thanks for the amazingly detailed response!

I never would have thought to check the connector by the shifter, unfortunately it's connected securely (removed & replaced), and still no O/D indicator.

I started removing the instrument cluster, got stuck with the edge clips and decided to wait for the weekend to pull this apart. It's getting dark, and the parts stores would be closed by the time I needed to get bulbs, so I'll have to wait.

Thanks again for the detailed photo's. Now that I know what I'm looking for, and how to get to it, I'll be able to get this fixed.
