3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
All,
After some review and and talking to various suppliers, many reapeat the same words referring to a German manufacture of O2 sensors that just don't hold up.
I have no real proof myself, but found this and wanted to share it with you.
A car’s oxygen sensor is constantly exposed to a barrage of harmful contaminants that can rob it of its ability to produce an efficient reading. Engine lubricants, sealants and additives, silicone, and/or oil can damage a sensor’s element.
DENSO First Time Fit® oxygen sensors are coated with a special formulation of aluminum oxide to trap impurities outside of the ceramic element. In head-to-head testing against the leading competitors, DENSO oxygen sensors were rated two times more resistant to silicone and lead poisoning.
DENSO oxygen sensors are specifically designed to meet the increasing demands of today’s engines. Each of our oxygen sensors is constructed of the highest quality materials available. High-quality stainless steel, porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), fluorine rubber, aluminum oxide, high-grade platinum and ceramics are used in each DENSO sensor.
Bottom Line: DENSO produces the finest oxygen sensors in the world. How can we state this? Because, in many cases, we designed, tested, and manufactured the OE unit. Features:
SUPERIOR DESIGN — Maximizes engine performance and fuel efficiency while reducing harmful emissions.
DOUBLE-PROTECTION COVER — Maintains proper unit temperature for quicker response times and protects the ceramic element against silicone and lead poisoning.
ALUMINUM-OXIDE TRAP LAYER — Keeps silicone and lead outside the ceramic element through DENSO’s exclusive design, preventing damage to the platinum electrode.
STAINLESS STEEL HOUSING — Resists corrosion and contamination with a rugged, watertight body.
POROUS PTFE FILTER — Allows atmospheric oxygen to enter the sensor without permitting water or engine contaminants to seep into the casing.
All Denso Oxygen sensors shipped from URD contain the needed gaskets or anti-sieze depending on type of sensor. They are direct plug in sensors just like the ones that came on your vehicle from Toyota.

i don't think that i have ever seen an after market sensor that will hold up in a toyota. Every one that i've tried had to be returned as being defective, and replaced with an OE denso sensor. For me at least i just go to the dealer the first time now. botch seam to last about a week in toyota's, but do fine in domestics.
If it weren't for my personal experiences with them I would believe that the op's post was just pure marketing.
My old sensor disappeared, long story, I still dont know the cause, got a universal bosch I'm thinking November '08, and it has been fine since, it was the upper one on the manifold. I was reluctant, but I wasnt fond of driving with no O2 Sensor so I got it. No CEL, and still good gas mileage ~33 MPG HWY.

SADLY, SHE HAS MUCH MORE MODS...
No problems with Bosch. Go for their planar type sensor which is more resistant to contamination than traditional thimbles. The Bosch 15733 is a popular mainstay (for those approved applications) and the price is right, too.
Then it's NTK sensors (one of the NGK group of companies). Their pump-cell sensor technology is second to Bosch. Only if nobody else makes it do I spec Denso.

^^^ 1+ bosch o2 sensor as replacement since mid 2004 maybe 2003
had to splice into wires...
everything is fine and still works... (knock on wood)
