Thumbs up IMPORTANT!! U-Joint Issue---SOLVED

Okay, so for a couple of weeks I have been experiencing very hard steering. It felt like my power steering let go. Checked everything and it was fine. I thought then maybe rack or/and pinion...checked it..still it was fine. Checked mostly all other aspects of the suspension and steering...seemed fine.

Well after much frustration I went to see my mechanic. He said simply go down to the hardware store and pick up a can of WD40 of similar type product and apply it to the U-Joint that is located right where the steerign colum comes through the firewall to the engine bay.

This morning bright and early I ran down to the local Home Hardware and got myself some WD40. I went home sprayed it on and let it sit for about 20 mins or so. I then started it up and took it around the block. WOW! the steering was even better then when i first got the car!

So there you go if your steering get hard or starts to stick, simply apply some WD40 to the U-joint right where the steering colum comes through the firewall into the engine bay, then let it sit for 20 mins or so and take it for a spin. Should be fine, if not consult a local mechanic but it worked great for me!

Exclamation Don't Stop there; Safety Hazard!

My 2Cents, you need to follow with that action and A) best choice, replace the joint or at a bare min. B) add some real oil to keep it alive.

WD - loosened it and got it free but WILL NOT LAST!
Grab some Mobile1 synthetic (example) and start dropping that on there. Rotate, drop some more. Do this every couple of days from a different positions.

It will bind again as WD is not a lasting product. I know it got it moving for moment, but don't kid yourself, its only temporary and the last thing you or anyone else wants is the steering to lock and cause a crash.

Get some real lube in there!

I agree with what has been said about eventually replacing that joint. The WD-40 will wash away pretty quickly when it rains. If you are not going to replace it right now, I would at least spray some white lithium grease on it. That will be a lot more water resistant then WD-40.

I don't think rain or sun is the question as it'll be gone before sunset regardless. . . .
