Tweedledum, tweedledee. Solara vs Camry, auto vs manual, 4-banger vs 6-banger, trim line (LE vs XLE), condition of car are things to look at...1998 vs 1999 is pretty much irrelevant.

What is about the stableness/reliable and quietness of their engine? Which one is better or they are the same?

They are virtually the same in all aspects.

Both engines are very reliable if maintained.

The 5S-FE (4 cylinder) is not as well balanced (idles a bit rough), but it's a solid engine, and tolerant of lower octane gas. At this age, most of the oil seals are in need of replacement, although they tend to be slow leaks rather than gushers.

The 1MZ-FE (6 cylinder) has quite a bit more power, but has higher compression than the 5S-FE so it's not going to like low octane much (it'll run OK on 87 octane, but much lower than that doesn't make it happy). The late 90's 1MZ-FE also had a rep for being more prone to sludge than most engines, although both engines will sludge if the oil isn't changed on a reasonable schedule. The 1MZ-FE also is really wedged into the engine compartment of the Camry, so it's significantly more hassle to work on.

go with the one in better condition of course. what hill says in his post above about sludging is very true of the 1fmze, and even for the 4 for that matter, so beware of sludging issues on a 10 year old car...

if heavily sludged it will sometimes be evident simply by removing the oil filler cap and examining the area under the hole. Crusted sludge (insert finger and check results in the hole) is bad news but can sometimes be reversed without too much disasembly. the dashboard oil light flashing or oil pressure gauge fluctuating at idle could also be a sign of bad sludging.

Its probably bad form to pull a valve cover on a used car but pulling several spark plugs is probably not too objectionable - a healthy engine will show dark grey with little or no deposits.
