P1780 on 97 5SFE

Hey all,

I started getting this code about 2 weeks when I had a starter problem in my 1997 5SFE.

P1780 Park/Neutral Safety Switch

Now since I fixed the starting problem and it is still coming up. I am planning to fix it once I have enough free time.

Currently, everything is fine except for this CEL. I think the park/neutral switch needs adjustment. Will driving the car with this code cause any problems in the near future?

P1780 is usually apinched or broken wire going from the neutral safety switch to the rear tail lights/back up lights. Check the wiring harness in the trunk where it flexes. I bet you'll find at least 1 damaged wire. It’s usually the ground wire.

Thanks csaxon. I will check it out later. But if there a short there, would it blow a fuse already?

I read some other posts about this code and some members had trouble with their back lights not working.

All of my rear lights are working fine now.

Can anyone tell me where is the ground wire back in the trunk?
