Car Overheating

My 1996 Toyota Camry 4cyclnder overheated and steam went everywhere, and made a hairline crack in the radiator.I got the car to my house and ordered parts over night.Ive replaced my radiator, thermostat, thermostat gasket, radiator hoses, fan no.1,2,3relays.I filled it up with anti-freeze and put some anti-freeze in the resevoir tank as well.I started it up and waited for 3 min and turned in the ac..FINE,then turned on the heat....no HEAT.The anti freeze from resevior tank was bubbling and I pulled the hoes out.and steam was coming out the hose.So steam was coming from the radiator over all. What am I missing?

Well, for the moment let's assume you don't have a BHG...

Did the heat work before the overheat?

First, burp the system. Fill radiator, fill reservoir halfway, leave radiator cap off. Start engine. Turn heat on full blast. Let 'er warm up. Gently squeeze the upper radiator hose to help get out air (gently -- you don't want to squirt antifreeze all over creation). If the level in the tank goes down much, keep topping off. If the temp gauge goes above halfway, or you get strange things happening in the radiator (such as bubbling), shut 'er down and scream for help. If nothing bad happens, let it run for 15 minutes or so, occasionally revving the engine to help pump the coolant. By this point the heat should be working, the radiator should be nice and warm. Shut 'er down, top off the radiator, put the cap on and let 'er cool. You'll probably get a small amount of coolant sucked back out of the reservoir while it cools. Should be good to go after this. If problems, guess we'll take it from there...

Did you also replace the radiator cap?

<sigh> OK, the wiring diagram is at www.camrystuff.com, Generation 3, 1994 Camry Wiring Schematics (1995 and 1996 are pretty much the same, wiring-wise). Since you've changed out 80% of the controls for the fans, you're going to have to pull out the multimeter and trace things...there are just too many possibilities to go back-and-forth on.

Given your radiator fans are not coming on; do none work when you turn on your A/C?

As for burping the system, Hill8570 gave you an excellent process to work through. Have you done this? While doing it, do you constantly see bubbles coming out of the radiator where the cap would be?

I assume you're talking about the fan switch on the radiator. Easy enough to check -- just disconnect the connector from the switch (which is on the bottom passenger side of radiator). Both fans should come on...if not, you've got bigger problems than the switch -- see my above post referencing the wiring diagram.

Yes, that would be the best test. I was thinking if he didn't know about where the radiator coolant temp. switch was located, he could at least see if the radiator fans work when he turns his A/C system on (if his A/C system works).
