Thumbs up Did a complete tranny flush today. Results phenomenal!

I want to thank dz63 for the DIY posted on this forum. Everything went A OK with the procedure. It took me no more than 2 hours to complete the process, and to put everything away and make sure the fluid level was correct with no leaks. Now, my transmission shifts like a dream and is noticeably smoother. Not only that, but I no longer have the pressure of doing the job stuck in the back of my mind. I encourage anyone with a wacky transmission to tackle this process, and to follow the DIY posted on this forum step by step. It feels GREAT to not have to feel a long and hard (no pun intended) shift anymore because of burnt up transmission fluid.

yeah, mine felt same harsh and longer shifting with old like 64k old tranny fluid (might have been 10yrs old in fact). new fluid fixed me too, though i used toyota dealer complete tranny flush service (including differential) for ~$200. i guess next time a simple drain&refill of tranny and diff will do it.
i also plan dropping the pan next time i do it and clean the screener.

Good job. What ATF brand did you use?

That is great! I have been nervous to do that because if it has not been done in a long time (like mine with 117K and 16 year old Tranny Fluid) it may loosten any gum quieting the problem and your tranny may burn up. Now I have talked to 2 different toyota mechanics about that and my own personal private mechanic. I noticed that my 96 celica was shifting hard and they told me not to do it. I may try this though, especially with that fantastic write-up from dz63... you have inspired me! :O

I was actually talking to my dad about this and how I felt I should get it done because I have no clue when it was last changed and I just hit 200k last week. He told me he could probly get the guy at his shop to do it for ~$100 (he works at a nissan dealership). I hope it yields great results for me too

Use some Auto-RX in the trans to clean it up before you change out the fluid. Just don't be thumping the trans so hard before you git the fluid changed out.

Thank you... I used Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage fluid. $21 a pop for 1 gallon, but that was the only Valvoline fluid I could find in gallon size. I wanted to purchase Synthetic fluid but couldn't find the gallon sizes!

yeah, they say there might be some ill effects if your tranny has over 100K on the clock and hasn't had a fluid change... Not sure how accurate this is, however. I deliver pizza in my car and have had my tranny rebuilt since I got the car 2 years ago. Got it with 173K on the clock, I now have 230K.

$100 is the average price I suppose. However, some places will charge you more. I wound up paying $42 for two gallons of MaxLife ATF, and $16 for the new gasket/strainer, so I saved $42 by doing the process myself. I'm thinking of doing the differential soon as well... I'm sure it will yield great results for you!

yea about 60k... The history on the car is unknown, maintenance-wise. I never really checked the tranny fluid because I didn't think it was that important, until my tranny went and I had to get it rebuilt! It was because the fluid was so old and burnt, it was unable to lubricate the tranny efficiently, which led it to burn up.
