I did this once on my pickup. You just roughly line up the splines of the new stud to the spline grooves in the hub. Lightly tap the new stud in, use a few washers between the hub, and lug nut, then with the flat side of the lug nut facing the hub, tighten to spec. The new stud will fully seat into the hub once tightened to spec.
The reason the splines seem damaged is because it's supposed to be a very tight fit. Plus, the new stud may not be an exact match to the old one. The splines may be slightly larger. Anyway, once you install the new wheel stud, it'll be fine.
