Hi all, I'v got a question. Is it possible to install ABS to a non ABS car?
Mine is a 2000 JPP 5sfe model 154k. don't have ABS in my car so bought bridgestone potenza RE960AS poleposition 4set with road hazard warranty, life time balance at firestone for $500.
These have one of the best all weather traction ratings online reviews(9 for wet traction).
"BUT" was upset by its wet traction as couldn't stop the car even at 35mph on a smooth wet road with 4 people in the car. So got this idea of installing ABS... lol
Chris Crash is technically write, it can be done. He is also right about having fun with it. Quite your day job for a couple of months, and roll up your sleeves.
Practically, though, you can't. ABS requires sensing wheel spin. You don't have the anything on your wheels right now needed for ABS (toothed shims or hub gears, sensors to pick up the teeth or gear tooth inputs, wiring to all 4 sensor, the ABS unit itself and all the steel tubing required, the ABS control module, the wiring harnesses for all this). You would be far better off, if ABS is important to you, to trade your current car in on one that already has ABS installed from the factory.

In theory you could do this but you'd basically need a whole 'donor' car that came stock with ABS, you have no idea how many speed sensors, proportioning valves and 'splitters' and control modules there are in a ABS system that you do not have with you non-ABS car. Oh and don't forget the ABS fuse relays, main computer and 100 other misc. 'small parts' I'm forgetting.
I'm in the middle of a total brake rebuild on a gen3 with ABS and I'm eliminating it because of the cost involved with replacement parts, not to mention I don't like ABS; I don't want the car trying to interrupt what I'm doing and change it, I just want it to do what I tell it...

I called toyota and asked em d same question... they said
buy a totaled 97-2001 camry which has ABS,on board computer working with total frame of the car in good shape. And charge me around $2k to swap the rest on my car onto it. that was funny.
which i don't want to do that...
TN members please suggest me a good(best) wet traction tires 205/65R15.

Unfortunately that sounds about right. There's SO MUCH involved with ABS its crazy, all the components are very tough to get to and remove/install and all brake jobs are quite labor-intensive; not to mention how rusty most components are, even on newish cars.
Good wet weather tires are tough to come by to be honest, especially now with the price of imported rubber, if you don't want to pay a premium you're best of with a domestic manufacturer. Try a tire selling site and read customer reviews of the different products.

I just did some research. All gen 4s are supposed to have to have ABS standard. Even the 4cyl models. The only exception is the 4cyl CE... ABS was optional on that model.

Wife has a 2001 Camry LE...no ABS.

Seems odd that ABS would be normal equipment on Gen 4's (except the CE), but not so on Gen 4.5's. Seems like ABS became more widespread in all models over time. Wonder why Toyota would have gone in reverse on this on the Camry?
Okay... that's odd. I was looking through the brouchers for the 97 camry on ToyotaReference.com and assumed that all years and gens after 4.0 would be the same.

I don't think they did.... but maybe they did. Only way to be sure is the ToyotaReference.com brochures.

My 97 CE did not have ABS.
My 97 LE does have ABS, it just doesn't work. Haha.
According to the 97 broucher, 97 CE 5s-fe models had OPTIONAL ABS and 97 LE 5s-fe models had ABS standard.
