Tranny/Diff Fluid Replacement.

I have a 1994 Camry v6 (with a 3VZ-Fe engine). According to schedule i should replace the diff gear oil. As far as i know this includes:

- opening the drain and fill plugs on diff
- draining it via the drain plug
- closing the drain plug
- filling until it starts to spill out the fill plug.

Do i need to replace any nuts or anything on the diff or can i use the ones that are there?

Also i would like to know how to replace the transmision fluid. I know u check it and add to it via the dipstick, but i dont know where and if there is a drain plug for it.

Thanks a lot everyone.

Manual or auto?

Assuming auto, the DIY threads Automatic Transmission Flush and Filter Replacement (5S-FE) and Differential Fluid Change might be useful. Since those are both for the A140E (the auto tranny for the 5S-FE), they're not 100% accurate for the auto tranny coupled to the 3VZ, but they're pretty close. Biggest difference is going to be location of the fill hole for the differential, and fluid capacities.

BTW, always open the fill hole for the differential before opening the drain hole -- you don't want to be in the position of stripping the fill hole plug right after you emptied the diff.

The only thing that might need to be replaced are the crush washers on the drain and fill bolts, especially if any previous maintenance reused the old ones.

If its an automatic, the pan should have a drain plug. Only about half the ATF will drain out. Measure what was drained out and refill with like amount through the dipstick.

thanks a lot! i read both of them. The diff flush seems really easy. One thing though, he says he compensated for the front being higher, how much do i compensate? (i use a pair of ramps to lift car)

Also do i need to replace the filter for the tranny? how about the strainer (i dont really know what this is)?

Someone posted their that on the v6's the tranny fluid runs to the diff. can i just change the diff or do i have to also change the tranny fluid?

k thanx, im not sure of the last replacement (as it would have been with the previous owner). Can i just resuse the same one?

I saw the guides hill8570 gave. They show the tranny flush as replacing it like u said but also running the car to get the rest our of the system. is this necessary?

Thanks both for ur replies and ongoing help!
