Sorry to the admins if placement offends -I know there is a dedicated audio tech forum but I also know that this probably affects a lot of us and that we (or at least I) rarely stray outside the Gen3/4 forums.
For all the people who like me live in a rough area and can't have or don't want a shiny stereo but want sound quality and volume, I've managed to get all four stereo channels out of the stock factory tape HU as pre-outs (to drive amps & subs) and get a 3.5mm jack input (for iPod or Zune or whatever) into the same one.

(apologies for the ghetto-ass 'bench' system)

Hey guys, awesome news. Had a play this afternoon and finally got it working properly.
I'm using the integrated amp HU (although I see no reason it won't work with the premium HU) and have mmanaged to hijack all four channels as they leave the sound processor. This means that the crummy amp in the back hasn't had time to distort the signal, but the volume/bass/treble/fader controls still work. Unfortunately you need to be able to solder damn well to do it (I'm going to get someone else to do it). Also, I'm unable to tell about the levels yet and won't be able to find out how they are until I unearth my voltmeter or get it in a car.
Also mannaged to create (hack)a a 3.5mm input by emptying a cassette and hijacking the cassette deck function. You connect a 3.5mm headphone input to the new jack, put the empty cassette in the deck and voila, input without radio/tape head distortion! Also, any fat-fingered-fool can solder it - even me...
How-to coming this weekend
