Yup, the lysol works. It's best to get it all in there as best as you can, and as soon as the can is empty, turn the blower off and let it sit in there for a while to eat the nasties. Then flush with another can. Lysol isn't that expensive, so you can be generous with it.
The underlying cause is a little difficult to explain, but if you want to avoid this in the future, make a habit of turning off the a/c compressor and letting the blower work for a few minutes before turning the car off. This helps dry the evaporator and case, and prevents mold from forming as easily. I usually hit my "A/C" button a couple blocks from the house. It's not uncomfortable by the time I get out of the car.
