a/c not working

hey guys new here, glad to be on such an active forum!

i have a question, i tried rechargin my a/c and have done it before a few years ago w/o problems. now this year i recharged it because it wasnt working and it doesnt work,

what could the problem be? the fuses look good, there is no leaks i checked the pressure is good.
could it be the compressor clutch?

if fuses look good then you have some failure in a/c system. it might be a broken wiring or some mechanical parts got broken. what happens when you turn a/c on now, can you see air bubbles in sight glass on drier receiver tank (by radiator usually), are they passing by or there is no nothing ? does the compressor kick in ?

adding gas when system is empty is not a solution to anything, at least not in a long run. if there was no gas in first place it means there was a leak. when system leaks at some point it starts running almost dry (and hot!), because together with gas you loose also oil (yes there is oil too). if it was like that for long time something might have seized up (compressor most likely).

you will have to go to the local shop, pay them $120 and let them do the vacuum test (this process also removes moisture from system) on system, see if it really holds, then they will put the gas back up (and oil if needed)... shop may use a UV additive to track the leak with UV light and pin point the leaky part.

however if root cause is mechanical (compressor seized), then it will cost you several hundreds $$$. replacing compressor is no fun, but maybe your trouble is simple and a specialist will figure it out in no time.

the compressor doesnt turn on thats the whole thing! and there is refrigarant.
could it be the clutch or anything else we can still check before taking it to a mechanic?

i think only a mechanic can properly assess it any further. compressor maybe shot by this time and they may tell you simply it requires replacement (e.g. with remanufactured unit to keep cost low).

i don't know much more about it, maybe someone else would like to chime in and drop 2 cents.

Have you tried turning the compressor by hand? Reach down and grab the clutch and try spinning it (obviously with the engine off). It should spin fairly easily. If not, you need new compressor.

Also, do you have a manifold gauge set? Readings from that would help tremendously. If you put too much refrigerant in, a pressure sensor may be telling the compressor not to turn on. A defective sensor will also send a false signal.

Have you checked for voltage at the plug for the clutch coil to see if it's even being tripped?

Just some things to check. I'm by no means an a/c guru, but i've seen some pretty weird things take out a/c.

Even if you do get it working, it's never a bad idea to have the system evacuated, vacuum checked and charged again. a/c systems don't have a preventive maintenance schedule, but sooner or later parts start to go bad. It's good to have early warning of any leaks, and also good to get rid of any excess moisture that may have snuck in.

Good luck!
