Looking to get 17" tires/rims... Performance effected?
Hi, as the title says, I'm looking to get some 17's. Does this upgrade in tire size have an effect on gas mileage, stopping performance, brake wear, etc.?
I currently have the P195 70 R14 tire size with rims.

Bigger tires, wheels generally equate to more weight and rolling resistance which will affect your performance. I went from 15X6" steel wheels with 205/65R15s to 16X7" alloy wheels with 205/60R16s on my Camry. The net gain for each corner was only one pound, so I cannot really tell anything different, except for slightly sharper handling.
Some wheels weigh less than others and the lighter weight wheels will always cost more given the same size.
If you want to put 17s, then I would recommend 17X7 rims with 215/45R17 tires. You can install something like 225/45R17s on 17X8 rims, but you're adding more weight. Remember, it's not just the about larger diameter, but larger width wheels and tires increase weight also. Wider tires will also increase rolling resistance.
Take a look at this article, which was in last month's issue of Car & Driver magazine. It compares different wheel tire/combos from 15" to 19" on a VW Golf and it's effect on acceleration, braking, skidpad, noise, mileage, speedo error, weight, etc..
I've got 17's on my 92. They are wider, but the overall diameter of the tire is almost the same as my stock setup, so the speedometer is not noticeably affected. I havent noticed a drop in performance, and it handles much better in corners and in the rain with the wider tires. Since the overall diameter is almost the same there is no problems with clearance or fitment. As far as stopping performance there shouldn't be a difference, not noticeably at least. The weight is about the same maybe a pound or so difference as Tom was saying, as the steel wheels weren't the lightest to begin with. I'll go check and see what size tires im running later if you want. I'm happy with it, and the tires only run about 80 dollars a piece which is an average price.
^ Oh my god! Someone posted in before me! Thanks fellow C/D reader.

I'm running 215/45R17. I punched it into an online calculator with your stock specs (same as mine) and it reads...
"0.5% difference. When your speedo reads 60 mph, you are actually traveling 59.7 mph."
So if you want to keep stock speedo readings and the same amount of travel in the suspension, that's what I would go with. Hope that helps some. Also, my gas mileage doesn't seem to have changed at all. I still consistently get about 23 in town, and 29 on mostly highway with my heavy foot.
thanks for the replies guys.. i found a guy locally who is selling his new, barely used Nexen 17" tires with 17" rims that actually came off a Gen 3 Camry as the picture depicts... not sure what kind of rims they are, I'm waiting for him to call me back. check 'em out here if you want http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/pts/1728218905.html

it's green, but not the dark green. regular oem green.
The OEM green for 96 is dark green.

oh well i wasn't too sure because I see the dark green, like almost black, (which im assuming now is for the Gen 3) all the time. now that I think about it, I don't see that dark of a green on a Gen 3.5. It's like the emerald green that I'm talking about which I have.

The green for 92-95 is a TINY bit darker than the green for 96. Barely noticeable. Click the color names for pics. I even have a thread in show and share comparing the 2. http://www.toyotareference.com/camry#CA92

I'm pretty sure my rims are sportmax too, but a different design. And I'm running nexen n5000's on mine. And I saw another set the other day on an accord. I'm thinking some big chain must have had a combo deal on these. I paid 300 for all 4 with almost new tires. I'm pretty happy with the tires, they seem to do well in the rain and aren't too loud, I have no complaints about them.
