4th Gen 1MZ-FE in 3rd Gen Camry?

Hey folks,

Have a blown engine on my 1995 Camry V6 and I'm contemplating an engine swap myself. I've gotten a lead on a newer motor out of a 1999 or 2000 car (still 1MZ-FE), but I'm concerned about incompatibilities between the two versions of the motor across generations...

Can anyone who has performed a swap or knows more about the differences between the engines give me a run-down of whether or not this will be a straight swap?

I've found an official Toyota PDF that summarizes the changes to the engine from 1996 to 1997 (the year the new car came out), but I'm not sure how relevant or complete the list is:

http://camrystuff.com/manuals/Gen4/M...ous/97_NCF.pdf

In particular, the document describes a new EGR system that utilizes a valve position sensor as well as vacuum to control flow, and I'm not sure how compatible the old/new systems are with the old ECU. (see page 44 of the pdf)

Can anyone foresee any issues with performing this swap, from mounting problems on through to emissions?

Many thanks,
Andrew

You'd need to swap whole stuff, including harness and ECU, I believe. As far as I know, mounting is still the same, transmission is the same too (A541E).

Your an avid readers since 2004 with Zero posts?

No, i have never done the swap so I'll offer some thoughts only. In short if you strip it down to the bare block with heads I'd bet you can simply transfer everything over. That is assuming you can keep both engines out and have access to both at the same time!

At a minimum the engine harness must be moved, as your new engine has less coils. The rear bank of your old engine likley had 6 coils. Meaning: If the rear bank of the NEW engine isn't drilled and tapped to hold those coils you need the valve cover off the old one and new gaskets ect.

Must swap;
Wiring harness.
Coils.
Sensors, MAP.
Exhaust manifolds and EGR assembly.
Likely the intake plenum and intake manifold with old fuel injectors (because of difference in IAC?).

What I don't know about are the majors:
Is the secondary oil pan the same to fit as yours? Are the crank pullies the same diamter for the accessories? Are all of the engines mounts to the block drilled and tapped for your application?

Wrecking yards have an index called the Hollander Exchange. It lists parts that directly exchange with each other. You need to know if the CORE BLOCK assembly is a repalcement! Yes, we all think it is but it may not be easy.

I'd expect you'd be swapping most all of the smaller bolt on stuff. You could compare some stuff by pulling down two web pages side by side like http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/g_U_199...-AEPNKA_1.html

It'll give you peace of mind before spending the money.

What happened to the old 1MZ?

Hahaha... Former owner of a 1989 Camry (long since gone). Signed up to poke around, and I finally have a new project to work on...

I'm told the '95 Camry threw a rod, but I haven't opened it up to confirm. Car is a donor from a mechanically disinclined friend.

I was hoping to pull the entire motor - new one supposedly has the new EGR, intake and exhaust, and sensors. I doubt I'd be getting the ECU, though, hence the concern about the compatibility.

The BLOCKS and HEADS are swapable, and nearly all the sensors. You'll need to swap most of the accesories fromt he blown '95 engine to the '00 engine. The fuel rails/injectors, intake, EGR, etc. Basically the entire top section has to be used from the '95. The '95 engine harness will have to be used. Not 100% sure on the AC Compressor. The PS pump and Alt shou;ld be fine. The Shortblock from Toyota has the same part number for the Camry from 95-02 or 03. The 94 is an odd year block, but still interchangeable.

you only need the fuel rails and fpr because of the return fuel system (better)

intake because of the idle air control and so the egr, and really the block ISN"T the same ..... current part yes but 96+ has a smaller water jacket so you need keep up on oil changes and check the pan on the new block
