How can I make my car recognize a new ignition key?

Have a 2001 XLE with keyless entry.

Ignition key tumbler died. I installed a new one and the car will crank but not start. Apparently the car is programmed to recognize the old key, not the new one. I made a temp fix by removing the key sensor ring from around the tumbler, and let it hang with my old key taped to it. The car now starts.

Does anyone have a method for making the car recognize a new ignition key? Or am I stuck going back to the dealer 600 miles to the south .

The process is a ways down in the thread. Solara/Camry is the same car.

Hi, thanks again. For the Camry the process as written is correct and to confirm step 1, you have to depress and release both pedals before starting step 2.

Also, they send two keys with the new lock, and although the keys are cut the same, the codes for the keys are different, so you must go through the process for both keys, to add both key codes to the car.

Disappointed that Toyota won't volunteer the procedure especially when the nearest dealer is 8 hours away and they'll already supplied and been paid for the parts. Also $100.00 programming charge for less than two minutes of work pushing pedals seems excessive.

yeah, only one of keys is master, the other is a valet key i think. your car has the immobilizer in it that's why programming of keys was necessary, mine doesn't have this feature (have alarm though), so i got my blank key of ebay for $11 and dealer cut it for free (no programming).
