fuel gauge problem

Just purchased a 97 Camry, filled it up with gas and needle only went to 1/2 tank. Next day it was at 3/4 tank, then after I drove a while it dropped back under 1/2. My question is: is the fuel sending separate from the fuel pump such that it can be replaced alone? I'm assuming the unit can be accessed via removing back seat of vehicle?

Thanks,
Mike

What's an "out camry"? And I understand that it is not instant like other manufacturers, but how is that related to my problem?

Thanks

Sulfur corrosion is a common problem. Sounds like that's what happened. Try a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner next time. It's about ~$7-8, but not sure if this can be reversed. Keep using top tier gas may help in the longer run, with the new sender.

Maybe spring $50 for a new fuel level sender unit and tank cover gasket. Replace the wimpy fuel filter up front too. But be careful of seized flare nut on the bottom of the filter causing a twisted fuel pipe.

working now !!!

I removed the fuel module from the tank this past weekend to answer all my questions. This fuel module contains the fuel pump and the sending unit such that each can be replaced separately. I played around with the fuel sending unit and cleaned the contact area. After putting it all back in, the fuel gauge is now working. There is a paper filter inside that module and a strainer. The reason I call it a module is because it comes out as 1 piece with the components attached. I'm going to post the job along with pictures when I get a chance. Not a difficult job really, just as easy as a brake job in my opinion. The biggest hassle was dealing with the black tar-like substance that is used to hold the cover plate on the access hole under the rear seat. You need gasoline or mineral spirits to get that stuff off you and/or your tools. I took some wax paper and placed it on that stuff to shield me from touching it when I was working.

Thanks for taking the time to update. Looking forward to the pics.

Chronoti, can you elaborate on how a "last known" system works? Thanks
