New Poster Questions

Hello!

I have a couple of questions...I have had this car for about a week now. I've noticed a couple of noises, and one concerns me more than the other...your thoughts, please.

The car has a low whine, from the time it is started, until it is shut off. Seems to be coming from the engine block area, passenger side, right near the generator. It seems to be RPM dependent, although most of the time it is constant. Not transmission, generator, PS, or AC, at least not from what I can tell. It isn't loud, but is somewhat annoying. Someone mentioned the balance shaft gets noisy with age. True or false? PO changed the timing belt at 128K, wonder if they bothered to change the WP or the idler & bearing/tensioner & bearing. Makes me worry, but non interference, unlike my Volvo 960. I do know that the PO took the car to the dealer for everything, has Bando-ND/Toyota belts.

I have some creaking/groaning noises from front/rear struts when going over speed bumps, especially in the mornings. Struts? Mounts? Assorted bushing bits?

Next question. I am going to put the car up on a friend's 2 post lift this weekend, and drop the differential plugs, and do a drain and refill with Dex.
Trans will probably have to wait, because I want to drop the pan, clean the magnets, and change the strainer. That I'll do the next weekend. Given a choice between the return line "flush" method, and just pulling the drain on the pan, and refilling that way seems much gentler than pulling that much Dexron all at once on a trans that has seen 164K, but it does seem the fluid was changed some time ago. It's beginning to varnish a bit. Time for it to go. My 1985 Corolla hatch trans fluid was black, and had chunks in it. I drained and refilled 6-8 times before I got it all out. Trans NEVER failed. I ran it only a day or two between those changes.

Opinions welcomed and certainly appreciated. Hope to make some new friends here!

The first noise sounds like alternator whine. Take the A/C belt off and see if the whine goes away.

The second noise. If it's a rattling squeakish kinda noise, it's probably the strut mounts.
