3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey everyone, it's been a while! I have been up to a lot lately, mainly engine bay work. I got rid of the ABS, A/C, and power steering. I got a set of OBX headers, and got a NST lightweight crank pulley. I am visiting my brother in Arizona for a month, and when I get back I am finishing the car.
After the 5 speed swap, I was putting close to 160 to the wheels. That was with the car in limp mode and a broken 2 1/4 exhaust. When the car is running, it will have no codes, a nicely sealed 2 1/2" header back exhaust into a straight through Dynomax "muffler", and that light ass crank pulley. Hopefully I will finally make more whp than my buddies Honduh! =D
Here is a video of the car and motor as they sit, waiting to be finished.
Yes the bay is green. The cage will be also. The outside of the car is going to be satin black, I have seen it on a few spec miatas and 944s at the track and it looks amazing.
Just thought id share some of the stuff iv been working on with you guys because you have always been helpful!
Let me know what'cha think!
(Oh, I would have just posted some pictures if I had a camera that worked. All I had to document my progress this time was my Flip)
Nice, what's the long term plan for the car if you don't mind me asking? Dude, when I work on my car, the garage floor looks exactly like yours The only person that knows where things are is me

cycledom- Well, with the motor out of the car it was really easy. You have to tighten up most of the nuts with the open end of a 14 wrench, so it kinda takes a while. Otherwise the EGR tubes line up nicely, and the y-pipe does as well. My Y-Pipe isn't on because it sits where we put the forks of the forklift to move it around.
projektvertx- Haha yeah we are always looking for parts and tools in the pile. My long term plans are to have a street-able wheel to wheel race car. We do it with Honduh Challenge cars so that's my goal with the Camry. Cage, some kind of standalone to really tune it and a nasty all motor 1mz are lined up for future projects.
Q? Seeing your intent; do you plan to ditch the rubber isolation biscuits between the sub-frames (front & rear) to stiffen the chassis? You siad its getting a cage right?
I hate to think billet is the only way but I've never seen them sold, so the only option may be "custom hand made". It sure seems like it would strengthen the body and give the car more feel for track events. Same with the lower A-arms. Urethan would give more feel, bushings the most, but I've never seen a greasable bushing kit for a Camry. {Sedan to race car!} people don't see them that way, which makes them great sleepers!
Nice work! Have fun!

I never thought about it... That's actually a damn good idea! Thinking back though, I remember them being pretty stiff.. Either way they have room to squish!
I am visiting my brother across the country for a month, so when I get back home I will look further into it! Thanks for the idea!

The point being, if people think putting in strut bar is something noticeable, ditch the rubber and notice what that does! That coupled with the strut-bar should firm things up nicely.
oh - do the rear too and ditch all that soft rubber in the control surfaces. . . Should get the response you're looking for!
