Are there two Catalytic Converters ?

1995 5SFE 2.2 4cyl

I am going to test the back pressure on the inline catalytic converter to see if it has failed by checking the pressure before and after the converter; but, I have a few questions. Ref: ( http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1516140 )

1) Why would the Camry have two catalytic converters and what is the difference between the two? I assume the "pre Cat" or what Toyota calls "Three–way catalytic converter" that is attached directly to the exhaust manifold is the primary cat.

2) Can the "three–way catalytic converter" fail ? If so how would you test it?

3) What would be considered normal back pressure fore and aft of the inline catalytic converter.

4) Is there an "Exhaust" section in the 1995 Series factory manual; because the only section I have that shows anything is the Engine section that depicts removal of the "three–way catalytic converter"?

I appreciate any feedback.

Why do you think you have a restricted CAT? Failure of the CAT would show up in high NOx readings and a DTC, a blocked CAT would show up as low/no power at high RPMs. Usually if you can see light through the CAT it is OK. Burning oil is probably the biggest reason CATs fail, unless you've managed to put leaded fuel through it. You can test exhaust back presssure using a vacuum gauge with all the exhaust components in place. My own FSM also only shows what yours does on the CAT(s).
