burning smell

i knew i had a oil burning issue already because everytime i did the oil change i would be short about 1qt after every drive walking towards the front of the car i get a rubber burning smell.

I saw at the back of the valve cover there was some MOIST areas so i thought valve cover gasket. I replaced it and still the smell and smoke is present... Not i thought maybe it was because oil still on there and etc. I pop the hood and i saw white smoke coming only from one cornner. Its the corner on the dizzy side. The back side of where cylinder 1 and 2 have no smoke at all... it was still moist but i figure that was from the oil gasket leaking... but walking towards cylinder 4 and around the dizzy and even hear where the ECT are there was white smoke coming out... i couldn't pinpoint it because engine was hot, i didn't see any huge oil puddles, the gasket install went on nice and smoothly, you think maybe the dizzy o-ring is bad or anything else that could be the issue?

maybe i should give it a week or so or attempt to clean the oil stains..

The 5S-FE has a number of oil seals that tend to get flakey after a decade or more -- the valve cover gasket, the distributor o-ring, the camshaft and crankshaft seals, the oil pump o-ring, and the oil pump shaft seal. Failures are more of a "weep" nature than a gusher.

If you want to be sure, get a few cans of generic "engine brite", clean off the engine, and then start looking for fresh oil. OTOH, your dizzy o-ring is certainly due for replacement. If you can do it DIY, it's probably worth your time (the o-ring itself is dirt cheap).

last time i did a dizzy o-ring took me like 2 hours to get the car running again.. I thought i marked it up right but obviously i didn't.. I'll chalk this up to something i should repair when i have the time.

my cylinder 4 plug when i pulled it was soaked in oil.... i never did the plugs on the car, i bought it at 50k and it has 114k but it had bosch plugs in it so it was replaced at one point.

edit... i checked the car today while it was cold. i felt completely around the VC and nothing wet/fresh at all even at the spots i saw the smoke from. Wet spots are near the dizzy on the side rather then were the injectors are. OR i think its more likely the coolant flange thingy, where the sensors mount to, there is a line pointing to the bulk head, the tip of that is moist as well. I never had to fill up coolant on the car. everything is confusing right now...

will this engine brite hurt the car?
