3rd Generation 93 camry need help

i have a gen 3 93 camry 6cyl i think it has an overheating problem even though the temp gauge is showing normal. while on a long 5 hour drive to sudbury ontario with 3 half hour stops on the way the car would hesitate and even drop out of gear. When i pull over to check the engine it is extremly hot. it also dosnt like to start smoothly in cold weather (ie) i need to hold my foot on the gas for a few minutes befor it willl idle by its self. iv sprayed carb cleaner into the intake to clean it out abit iv also removed the aic and cleaned that so now it runs abit better but still dos the same thing. Unfortunitly now im stuck and have no idea what to do.

Hmmmm a lot of things come in mind but what I would do is check the coolant level first, then check the air filter if its really dirty I'll change it cuz it made a lot of different in my car (power wise and temp which is really wired) and finally the spark plugs...
however does it burn oil ???

PS: its normal to feel the heat coming out the hood when you open it after or while a long drive specially the V6
