anyone subscribed to Solara projector retrofit on Camry thread ?
Hi guys,
At this point i'm not sure if i was dreaming or i have something messed up in my head , but i would swear i've seen one of our members using projectors and shrouds coming from some Solara to do a retrofit on Camry. there were pics of it in that thread and good description...
as far as i remember that projector (and shroud i think) was kind of like a direct bolt on with almost no modification required. not sure what head lamp housing OP used, perhaps it was a DEPO, that's one of things i wanted to check...
I've been searching for it since yesterday and cannot find it. didn't replied to that thread nor subscribed to it, so it's lost to me.
anyways, my Solara has almost clear head lamps (gen4 reflector with no ribs only 2 thin horizontal lines), so i was thinking if i maybe would be able to mount a projector in same housing ?
wanted to check which model that projector was coming from and which bulbs it was using.
i saw this thread a while ago (a few months), though i'm not sure it was on solaraguy.com or here ... sorry for confusion.
thanks.

you need to do a front end swap to something that had proctors i'n not sure on the gen 4 camry depo but if so then you need fenders, hood and bumpers maybe a few brackets to get it done

yeah, i just asked my friend who's buddy manages after-market car parts about the retrofit, there still might be hope. Yeah you can get ds2 hid kit from ddm tuning for $60, i included in my email they try to get every cent from you
same here. i've got stock solara head lamps, all i need is inifiniti projector, cayenne shroud and some work. plus of course bulbs D2s with conversion adapter (i can keep my HID harness and ballasts)... guess what the price was $710+s/h fuck them!
i paid $120 for my HID conversion kit (H4 high/low bulbs though), and above company seem to double every price (D2S conversion kit from them $275), probably their profit margin is like 200-300%.
i could probably save on shipping as i could get there myself, but for that price i don't even want to talk with them. i was suspecting it once i've seen a NYC telephone number ... fucking Manhattan...

ok, i pushed the subject a bit further with the guy from HID Illusions and decided to post his last answer. judge by yourselves. bottom line is he charges $300 for labor only.
Quote:
The Philips bulbs you are referring to for $60 is the 85122 bulbs. We only
supply 85122+ bulbs mainly for performance and their longevity of output
compared to the 85122. But we do also carry used 85122+ bulbs for $50 a
pair. And no, if you get D2S bulbs, you do not lose high beam. High beam
is produced from the projector units themselves, not the bulb output. But
if you feel that our prices are high, that is perfectly fine, but that is
why I stated IF you wish to purchase parts from us. We never stated that
it was mandatory. So if you wish to provide your own parts, our labor rate
is $300 plus return shipping. This is not any cheap $50 made in China HID
setup, so please do not try comparing HID lighting from China vs. the real
HID setup deal. You can purchase brand new OEM HID headlights from
dealerships for at least about $700+ depending on the model, and that is
WITHOUT HID bulbs and ballasts. So honestly, $710 plus shipping to get it
customized to your liking is actually not a bad deal, but also
understandable since this is much more than $50 for a set of aftermarket
kit. Let me know what you decide on doing or if you have any additional
questions. Thanks.

now, i did some searching on ebay and it seems i could get:
-a pair of used infiniti fx35 bi-xenon projectors (original) for $190 shipped tops,
-a pair of cayenne shrouds (replica only unfortunately) are cheap around $34 shipped.
considering i already have almost clear head light lenses would just need to scrub & buff them inside & out ... and assuming i would be able to do the labor (questionable for the moment haha) the parts top cost would be ... $225 plus D2S plug adapters ($15 from mod-express) and new Phillips D2S bulbs ($60 from mod-express) ... or i could get new D2S harness with bulbs from mod-express and sell HID H4-H/L conversion kit.
grand total $300 including shipping, so where the hell is that $800 !!???
question is how hard is the labor ?
I guess state inspection in July/Aug will tell if my no projector HID passes or fails the safety check. if it fails i will think of getting the retrofit (probably will look for a cheaper pro in my area who can work on my parts).
however if my current HID head lights pass inspection I leave it on like it is

dude honestly im not going to pay $800 for freaking headlights. The thing that pissed me off was i was trying to get some headlight retrofits for my 2001 4runner and he goes cause its single reflector i charge about $600 plus ds2 HID kit.... wtf? i thought it would be seriously way cheaper than my camry, found a diy for the 4runner id be spending about $200 since i got some parts laying around in my father's warehouse.
