I think he means the rear suspension rod that goes from the wheel to the center of the body. There are two fixed rods (towards the front) and two adjustable rods (towards the rear), one set for each wheel. The rearward rod is adjustable in length so you can change the toe angle of the rear wheels. If the rod was bent it would explain why your rear alignment was out. Maybe they were still able to adjust the bent rod and complete your alignment.
When the rear end is out of alignment the car can be a handful to handle. If the rear tires are on different types of road surfaces, the one with the most traction tends to steer the car, and you can notice it. The rear of the car will seem to jump. The car will also dog track on the road, drive somewhat sideways to one side or the other. When this is the case you will notice the steering wheel being off center to keep the car driving straignt down the road.
