Reverse lights not working, need help!

Reverse lights are not working, no fuses are blown and it is inspection time!!

I found a small disconnected 3 wire connector on the harness at the back of the transmission and nothing to connect it to, perhaps it is an unused connection on my car.

Where is the switch that turns on the reverse lights?

1992 V6 Auto
Thanks in advance!!!

The actual switch is on the "front" part of the transmission near the throttle cable. But more than likely you have a broken wire in the trunk (left hand side) those wires love to break because of the movement when opening/closing the trunk. Follow the wires that run along the trunk hinge, just about the point it goes in behind the trunk lining that is where the wire likes to break.

If your reverse lights aren't working AND your dashboard reverse indicator light isn't either (assuming bulbs are ok) this thread may be of help to you:

[URL="http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272634"]

The discussion is on the 4-cylinder and it's automatic transmission, but may be somewhat relative to yours.

Also, see manual "A541E Automatic Transaxle - V6 Automatic Tansmission (4.76MB)" here:

http://www.camrystuff.com/index.php?page=Gen3_Manuals

Especially pages AX2-118 diagram 2, and AX2-16.

Thank you for the replies! I will check on the broken wires in the trunk, gotta get the kids breakfast and I will head out and take a look at things.

The indicator on the dash is on and the "R" lights up when I hit the brakes-

The "R" on the instrument panel should light up whenever you shift into reverse, not just when you hit the brakes.

If the "R" is lighting up when you're in reverse, then the problem is not likely the park/neutral switch on the transmission. If it was the switch the the rear backup lights would be out and the "R" on the instrument panel would be out also.

Likely a wire issue as was pointed out above.

Oh, so the "R" went out when I repaired the wire, just FYI. The other light on the dash that was on is for the clearance lamps which I had a right front burned out. Ill post when that one goes out.

Thanks again!!!

I'm having the exact same problem on my 94 camry. Not reverse lights and the "R" lights up when I hit the brakes.

Where is exactly was the break in the wire?

From what I remember it was between the where the bundle of wires is held to the drivers side trunk hinge arm and where it is held into the trunk bay. Just look under the protective covering where the wire bends and you are sure to find something.

I would go and look but I dont own the car anymore

Thanks, I found it. Definitely broken wires. White & green were broke and a red one broke when I was trying pull the wires closer to me.

Problem I have is I'm probably driving from WI to NC tomorrow and I don't have the time for wire to fix it right now. Maybe during my trip I'll stop off somewhere and see if I can get it fixed for a reasonable price.
