best type oil for 6cyl 1992 camry?

I went and bought some cheapo walmart "high mileage" 5W-30 .... I am wondering however, if this is the best oil to use at the moment. Im not so much concerned about the "high mileage" or "walmart brand" but the 5W-30... should it be 10W-40? 10W-30?? I don't know if there is a specific type to use. I even got a high mileage filter... my car has 193k...

wonder if those matter too.

I still have the receipt so i can take it back

Im great at changing oil, just not sure about the type to get

That should work. Not sure if the 'OEM' oil is either 5-30w or 10-30w. For the most part if your not in extreme weather condition, it'll be fine. I've been using high mileage oil on my Camry before and I believe that fix the issue with a top end knocking (sludge). I had to do oil change every 2 weeks though (black crystals was then in the drain plug).

I know the 1992 has the 3VZ, but the 1MZ recommends 5-30w.

As for walmart brand oil, I heard that it's just a combindation of the 'left overs' from other name brand oil (i.e. GTX, Mobile 1, etc, etc) or so I heard (people are welcome to chime in ). As long as you do the oil every 3K miles, I always find that better than getting super expensive (long life oil) and do it every 5K+...more so on the older Camrys.

At that mileage I would use 10w30. 5w30 is just a tad to thin.

Castrol high mileage is a good oil. Supertech stuff isnt bad either.

Uh guys. Manual says 5w-30 or 10w-30 ONLY. Depending on the climate. And I agree. If you've been using conventional, stick to it.

For summer time temps 5W-30 is a bit thin. Go with 10W-30. Use the thickest approved oil for the temps.

Walmart oil is fine. In some parts of the country it's Pennzoil, in others either Mobil or Warren Unilube. So you can get Walmart SuperTech 10W-30. Or I'd get Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 10W-30 during the summer, at about $2.77/qt, and switch to Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W-30 for the winter.

If you don't mind using a larger filter, pick up a Motorcraft FL400S while at Walmart. It's similar to the OEM -YZZD3 oversized filter.

And if you need to change the ATF and differential oil, Walmart's SuperTech Mercon-V (suitable for D-III) is a good choice too. The next step up is Castrol Import Multi-vehicle synthetic blend ATF. Use it in place of D-III for power steering too.
