A/C Compressor 1997 Camry LE 1MZFE

Engine is stalling when I run the A/C. I assume the compressor is locking up? Any reason as to why this may have happened? My mechanic is saying its going to be an $800 fix and that in addition to replacing the compressor, the receiver/drier also has to be replaced. Is this a hard DIY if I can have the r-134 evacuated at a local shop and then replace all the necessary parts myself? I know it involves taking the drive belt off.

yes easy diy search on google for the camry fsm (camry stuff i believe is the site) you can just dump the r-134 in to the environment but you will need a shop to pull a vacuum on the system post change out. also double check on iacv (search) to make sure that can rev up the engine i dont see a locked compressor stalling an engine maybe causing crazy amounts of smoke from belt slip.

If you have no A/C equipment, experience or knowledge then you best let a shop do this. You can save a little labor by having the shop re-capture the 134a and replace the compressor and receiver/dryer yourself, but refilling properly is best left to an expert. You can also source aftermarket compressor and receiver dryer here:

That's what I was talking about, having a shop remove the refrigerant and depressurize the system so that i can remove the compressor, and receiver/drier. Does anyone have a DIY on how to remove the compressor and receiver/drier?
