3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Okay I got my grandparents 92 camry and have decided to race it at the local Dirt tracks in the FWD class. I have completley stripped it down cut off the cat and the 2 mufflers, installed a cone filter inside the stock air box(still gets fresh air and not hot engine air). What else can I do to get more HP. I was looking at maybe timing or removing EGR. Any suggeustions.
Thanks!
Also does anyone make aftermarket engine part upgrades for this year camry?

First, have you ever raced anything before? Do you know what you're in for on a dirt track?
Second, take that cone filter off and put the air box back on. The benefit to risk ratio on a dirt track isn't worth it (zero benefit except slightly better tone). Which leads back to question 1.
Third, don't remove the EGR... Or anything else for that matter...
Fourth, I wish you the best of luck. I think you're gonna need it.
Edit to add: also good luck with power adders. You can advance the timing though, you can do that on any engine that functions on a timing cycle. Google...

He was saying he put a cone filter INSIDE the stock air box. Might actually help clean it better. But for dirt a buddy of mine told me in Iraq he used panty hose over the air intake tube, no filter at all. If that lets too much crap through, spread vaseline lightly over the hose. You're not gonna get any performance with an intake anyway.
But best of luck! These cars do relatively well on dirt, I used to go off-roading in my first one all the time. Then I flipped it in a ditch.
Just make sure you never ever plan on selling it or trying to make it look clean ever again. It will never happen.
look at ge heads other that maybe a set of headers and i never cared for the egr either your year ther should be no ecu tricks and you should also be able to do the afm mods and timing advances

What does the dirt track look like? Is it oval? Is it a road course?
I raced an 89 Omni about 10 years ago in an off road rally. Your biggest obstacle will be traction. Depending on the restrictions you will want to run dirt tires for sure, rules permitting. Falken used to make a great dirt tire. All I had done to my Omni was a MT swap, 14" aluminum wheels with Falken Dirts, roll cage and a pair of generic race seats with 5-pt harnesses mounted to that cage. Everything else was stock. Stock engine (anemic 2.2L), hood, fenders, lights, cooling, brakes. It was alot of fun. But shit will break. It will. I promise. The best thing to do is have at least ONE parts car. Also, don't expect to drive this thing to the event, pop on some wheels and tires, run it for a an hour or more then drive it home. Make sure you have a way to get it there, a truck to pull it and a trailer to get it there on. Dirt is NOT a pavement track. The best thing you can do, if you really want to get into dirt is, head to the local track, meet the people make friends and talk to the drivers that have been doing this for a while. Experience is what you lack. Ask to see if one of them will let you do a few laps with them. They may let you sit in the passenger's seat for a while.
Good luck. Going fast is not cheap. Look at what cars they run during the even, I doubt there will be a lot of imports. Their parts are not cheap to get, most domestics are.
Thanks for the info, keep it comming. I have already raced it twice, the tracks I run are high banked oval like 3/8 of a mile. Its funny racing my camry most of the guys are running little mazda, neon, or honda, and I am out there in a 4 door camry. It is a 4cyl with a 4 speed auto, most guys are running manual tranny but the auto in the camry is awesome. I take the green in L to about 7K RPM then shift into 2 after that I keep it in 2 the whole time it ocasionally hits the rev limiter!! this past weekend I did break a CV axle but traction will not be a problem next time i will be welding the spider gear in the tranny for posi traction. Well my next mod to engine will be EGR delete and advancing the timing(does the distributor turn on this model or will i have to fool the computer). Hey chronoti can u explain the AFM mod.
Thanks
I would strongly be against welding the spider gear in a FWD drive car man. For turning, both wheels are going to want to turn at the same speed this is not good on an oval course. The inside needs to spin slower. I recommend getting a 1.5 or 2 way lsd unit. There are some units out there, KAAZ makes one as well as Quaife. They are trusted units.

Class of '10
Redline on an auto 5s is ~6,000 - 6,500 IIRC. Keep that up and you can say goodbye to the transmission. You seem excited about hitting the rev limiter.
I guess if you blew it, that would give you an excuse to swap a manual transmission in there.
I don't really care about hitting the rev limiter, what good about it is that my gearing on the track is perfect I am able to use all the cars motor in 2nd without shifting to 3rd. My only problem is that going into a turn really hard it picks up my driver front tire and this past weekend it broke a cv shaft. My solution is I am trying to lose more weight but I am thinking making it posi traction will help big time in gain speed out of corner.
