Quick 1MZ O2 Sensor Question

1997 Avalon XLS that i'm working on for a family member. CEL was on and I read the code as P0135.... "Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1)". I assume that the sensor in the header on the side of the engine that faces you when you open the hood needs to be replaced. I just want to be sure which one of these parts I need to get. OEM Denso I suppose is the best. Here is the rock auto link. Thanks!

Notta - that'd be the hard to reach one by the rack & pinion not the easy one in the front!

Yup. Bank 1 is the rear bank, not the front. I replaced that one in my Avy a while back, and it's not as hard as it looks. It helps to have skinny arms (I don't) and a good assortment of 1/2" extensions. I might have used a u-joint too; don't remember.

And yeah, the OEM sensors are Densos, which is what quite a few of the folks on ToyotaNation swear by.

for oem/denso part check www.toyodiy.com/parts (give it car's VIN for best results)

or go with NTK/NGK sensors which seem to be better over Denso:

Thanks! Okay pre-cat non cali O2 sensor. Right bank = Bank 1? or am I wrong?

pre-cat non-cali would equal to upstream federal (narrow band thimble type).

i'm not familiar with right and left sides of a V6 LOL
... but i know that "engine's front" is actually where the timing belt/chain side is so i guess when you facing "engine's front"/t-belt side then the LEFT hand side is bank 1 (so called rear bank haha) and the RIGHT hand side is bank 2 (so called front bank LOL).

I bet you need LEFT = bank 1 = commonly known as the rear bank

Errr, thanks for the pic... but we need to be sure that Bank 1 is the LEFT bank.

I dunno which bank would be called left?... it depends on which side of the car you're standing.

I *can* say that bank 1 is the one closest to the firewall.

Perspective is always from the rear of the engine i.e. from the bellhousing to the timing belt.


bank #1 = Right side (by rack and pinion)
1, 3, 5 = bank1


bank #2 = left side
2, 4, 6 = bank2


But who cares, they're both the f'g same P/N! Ok - on the old stuff at least. . .

sensor 4209 requires you to put own connector on.

Remove intake air hose, and you will have lots of room!
