5-SFE w/Premium fuel

Anybody have opinions one way or the other on using either Mid or Premium fuel on this engine? 165K on the clock...not worth it at that mileage, maybe? The engine runs awesome, nice and quiet...as it should be, IMHO.

Doesn't need it. The 5S-FE only has a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Higher than 87 octane is just wasting money, and I've heard that running too high of an octane can actually lower horsepower.

Remember that the only difference between regular, mid, and premium is the octane rating. Octane is the measure of how stable the gas it. The higher the octane, the more stable it is and it's harder to get it to burn. The only reason for mid and premium fuels are for forced induction and high compression engines. This is because the compression in those engines can actually get regular gas to burn on the compression stroke before intended (aka pre-ignition or detonation). This will cause major engine failure, including holes in pistons and cylinder walls. The higher octane rating means that the gas is less likely to burn and will not pre-ignite. In a low compression, N/A engine like the 5S-FE this just means that you may actually lose power because you're not creating high compression to heat up the gas, and it will be harder to ignite than regular gas.

So in short, don't waste your money.

I've run higher octanes before in the 5S-FE. As stated above, don't waste your money.

On a 5s-fe, it makes no difference. On a 1MZ-FE on the other hand, it will make a difference. On a 5s-fe, I would spend money buying better quality (better additives) 87 octane fuel, like Shell or Chevron, than lower quality, Joe Blow 93 octane fuel.

^ When was the last time you cleaned your fuel system? V-power does better compared to what? Non-shell 87? I bet V-power is just as good as shell's 87 grade.

I notice a slight increase in power with higher octane fuel in my 5SFE, especially in the Winter with the fuel combination with cold temperatures. I guess everyone has a different account of their experience with higher octane fuel. It's really up to you to decide I think.

I think that the power increase with premium fuel might be due to the reduction of the weight of your wallet.

i bought the car about a month ago. Seems as if the PO took pretty good care of it, have all the original manuals, and papers from the local Toyota dealer. I believe I am the 2nd owner, the PO was an older woman, from what I can tell (the car smelled like old lady perfume) and i did not see any evidence of sludging at all. did a basic tune up on her, and replaced the PCV, as it seems it was gummed up, had a hell of a time fighting that out of the valve cover. It was a Toyota part. it runs really smooth and quiet, no shake at idle. the plugs were in good shape, OE ones, so i put the same type as the old back in, new NGK blue wires, and cleaned the TB. The timing belt has about 40K on it, according to the sticker on the T-cover. No leaks, antifreeze is Toyota red, and everything looks good. I changed the trans and diff with Dex IV, with new filter. Old fluid ws still red. Oil change coming up, Valvoline syn blend with Toyota filter coming soon. Probably will run 10-30, as she puffs a bit on startup, no oil comsumption otherwise. i think she will be a trusty car, but time will tell. Any suggestions on additional maintenance that should be done?
