3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I currently own a 98 camry le auto with about 127k miles on it. I am tired of driving an automatic and want a manual (my previous 2 cars were a 5 speed). I found a 98 Camry ce with 74k on it that's a 5 speed. Besides the obvious automatic tranny and some minor cosmetic things...
Is this a trade with no money on your end? I'm not sure about the difference in trim, but for mileage difference and the addition of the 5 speed, I would say it's worth it if you're not putting anything in. I'm also assuming these are both 4 cylinders?

I think it's worth it. But I just love the 5 speed in these cars.
You'll also lose power windows and locks. You'll have an antenna sticking out of the trunk. The seats will be different (more comfy in my opinion). You probably won't have cruise or ABS. You won't have power mirrors, heated mirrors, heated seats or the JBL sound system.
Also, finding parts for the manual is damn near impossible. Especially finding transmission parts.
It's a trade with no money down. They are both 4-bangers and are white. They both have A/C, cruise, and ABS. I don't mind the locks and windows b/c mine keep breaking anyway. The guy I am trading with is a Toyota mechanic, who wants an automatic. He is actually trading me and giving me a little money since mine probally has more stuff in it...
The person you would trade with, would get the better end of the deal
how do you figure. hes doing a straight up trade for a car with lower mileage and better gas mileage, not to mention less money spent on repairs of expensive electrical parts in the long run. Add money on top of it and id say hes getting the better end of that deal.
update: i looked @ the CE tonight and it's immaculate on both the inside and out. He replaced all the belts and fluids 3 months ago, it has a new clutch and brakes. The rubber is decent, though i will probably be getting some aftermarket rims sometime soon. Looks like the only major thing i lose besides the power mirrors/locks/windows would be the aftermarket air filter that i put in my LE.. I am kicking myself for tossing the old factory air filter ...
If anyone knows of any problems/ things i should check again tomorrow let me know !! Thanks (in advance)
i bought an '01 with 96k/4 cyl 5 spd and found out full coverage insurance runs about $25 lower per month if you're 19yo (you know, with the base car being slower and all)
no power locks and power windows and power thingies sucks a bit, but if you don't care much about then go for it
it might be a little problematic (and annoying) to roll the windows down on both sides (or at rear) when you driving alone
5SPD with 74k miles is always better then auto with 127k miles!!
My Power "thingies" have been broken for the last 6 months, just fixed them about a week ago (damn blown fuse.. ) I got pretty used to no power... anything. As for the windows down, I live in Tampa Florida where it's 90 + degrees with 80%+ humidity 90% of the year. I somehow don't think that will be a problem... (as long as the A/C works)

hehe, yeah life can be a bitch sometimes
on my end i'm used to driving old Buick V6 daily with no damn A/C, i fixed it so many times and it always goes bad, now seems that either compressor or clutch failed, screw it... though i need power windows
seems like you are golden then!
good deal BTW

On my old camry I didn't seem to have a problem rolling the windows down manually. It was kinda nice, as my now power windows need new motors and the old ones are slow as shit.

my point exactly!!! If i lived somewhere where I actually use the windows then I would worry, but I NEVER use my windows. (I have owned this camry for 2 yrs and have only had the windows down like 2 times)
