Reset sensors after repair?

Sorry, this is probably a dumb question!

I know after repairs/disconnecting the battery it takes a bit for the computers to fully reset...does the car have to be driven, or would letting it sit and idle give you the same result?

Can't get the car smog checked & registered until the computer resets itself...but can't really drive it around much because the tags are now expired!! Tried driving around the immediate neighborhood, and only managed to get about 15 miles onto it before I wanted to scream in boredom.

For $50-$60 you can buy a little generic OBD2 code reader. Most of them read out codes and check the monitor status for you. Its a handy little device especially if you are a do-it-yourselfer. The only other way to know for sure if the monitors are set is to take it to someone that has the proper scan tool for it.
