98 Camry Gas Tank Leak

Hi, my 98 Camry seems to be leaking only when the tank is full. The leak appears to be coming from the upper surface of the tank where it's not visible. Seems weird that its leaking from the top. How big of a job is it to change the tank? Thanks

Did you check out your fuel inlet pipe and fuel inlet hose?

There is a chance of accidental spark and explosion.

pull out the bottom of the back seat, open the access panel and check out that seal. there really arent too many inlets into the gas tank. being from canada, im wondering if the pressure or return line is leaking.

just curious, when you say it leaks only when full, is this when you are filling the tank? is the fuel leaking down the backside of the tank?

i haven't looked into exactly where the leak is coming from but at a quick glance it only seems to be leaking just after the tank has been filled, from the tank i think. it seems to be coming from the top left side. i can see a little gas running down the left side of the tank coming from the top but only just after filled until i've driven it for a while and the level drops. i'm gunna take the seat off and check the seal on the pump. i can't see how the tank itself would be leaking from the top, i doubt its punctured or rusted on the top?? thanks for the help so far.

I had a leak in my '87, couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from, it seemed to be near the filler inlet. I pulled the tank out, still couldn't figure it out. So I cleaned up the outside of the tank and replaced all the gaskets. The problem never came back, I suspect the filler inlet gasket on the tank was bad judging by the condition of the gasket when I pulled it apart, it was dry and brittle.

Another source of a leak could be a bad solder joint but not likely. If you don't have a rusted hole somewhere, the gaskets are likely to be in need of replacement.

does it only leak when you fill the tank? does it continue to drip after you leave the fuel station? my guess from what has been said so far, the filler neck has rusted through.
