3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Mine is a 96 V6 Camry that was made in July of 1996. It has 3 coil packs.
July should be the last shipment of '96's. For example, I think at GM they switch over their tools in the 2 week shutdown begining July, so I would assume you car was part of the late '96 models that got 3 coil packs only and used the Waste Spark Ignition System?

US made 1mz's from 94 - to early 96 had 6 packs. 97 on are 3 packs.
94 - to early 96 had 6 packs. << Not true, - parts listing from rockauto list ALL 96's had 3 packs, but I know the car I worked on had 6 and it was a 96. Although I'm not sure what month of production it was made and it had a rebuilder title. . .

Toyota lists production date 95/08 (MY1996) as the official beginning of the 3 COP 1MZs in the official parts catalog. Toyota usually does an August to August cycle (there are exceptions, of course).
The main differences will be in the igniter and ECU. The ECU will only have IGT1-3, as opposed to IGT1-6; same with the igniter. The advantage of the 3 COP system, is that it reduces cost for both production and maintenance. The downside is that it wears spark plugs a little faster.
The VVT-i 1MZs use 4-wire COPs, or integrated igniter COPs, so there is no separate igniter unit.
