4th Generation 99 LE with Climate Control Problem

I have a 99 Camry LE (4 cyl automatic) and I have an issue with the climate control.

No matter what you adjust the air position to (dash, floor, defrost, mix, etc...) I only have air coming out of the windsheild defrost vents and the
outter dash vents.

If the A/C is not on and the switch is on anything but defrost and then you turn the dial to defrost, the A/C light does come on and you can hear the compressor kick on and you can feel the difference in air temp so that leads me to believe that the switch is okay.

Are the ducts controled by motors/servos or by something else?

I looked under the dash and I located the cable/ducts for the tempature controls. Just above that I see a black box with a white gear on the end (unable to upload pics on here). It doesn't appear to move and didn't want to twist easily by hand. Is that my problem? If so, does anyone know of a proper name and/or a part number for the item? I've looked on a half dozen part listings and I can't find what I'm looking for (assuming that is my problem).

Please help.....I'm expecting my first child in a couple of weeks and I really want to fix this before he's sitting in the back seat with 90* weather outside.

Thanks.

Matt.

It should be controled by one cable. Did you check to see if the cable is still hooked up to the airmix damper control arm? Maybe the cable isn't hooked up to the control switch any more. Did you pull the control panel and check? Is yer Camry made in Japan or the US?

Control cable part number: 55909-06020

US.

I can see the cable for the heat/cool mix. It is connected and the dash switch does work.

Are you saying that the duct control (windshield, dash, floor) is also controlled by a cable? If so, where exactly is it located?

I did see this from under the driver's dash...

remove the front cover around the radio/climate control
the easier way is to pull from the end near the shifter (start near the cup holder) just pull it out and work your way to the radio.
The black surrounding cover should be out and you can see the bolts for the radio and climate control.
take out the radio, now you will have access to the climate control on top.
It will be difficult to remove the climate control because it tied with some wires and cable, just move the front knob and see if the real cable will move.
One cable connect to the heat/cold, another connect to the vents (the one that may be broken in your case)

replacement climate control can be found on eBay for ~$50

damper door

What about the damper door? Can it be damaged as well? I had a mechanic tell me that it wasn't seating correctly, thus causing the air to leak.
