97 V6 Tune up.

What do I need for a tune up. besides air filter/ oil change, what do I need? 6 plugs, what is the best to use? What kind of ignition parts do i need? Just wires?

Will the top manifold need to come off? how long should it take me.

thanks.

3rd Generation

Some one else can probably give you better information.
I'm just a beginner.
But I would suggest that you get some throttle body cleaner and clean your throttle body. This single procedure made the most difference in the drivibility or my car.

yea. its gonna take some time. you gonna have to take off the top part of the intake manifold, but you can l;eave your throttle body on if you don't want to remove your throttle cables, make your gonna need i thinka 1/4 alen wrnch, and small hands w/ a variety of bolts. if u expect to get to the back spark plugs. you can do alot of checking to see how things fit b4 you start and get a good idea of what you may need. i ended up using a whole can of break clean(after i removed my upper pelum) to get all the crud off it because throttle boddy cleaner wasn't working enough. a full tune up took me 6 hours of labor. 3 hours w/ 2 ppl that is. but i have 205K+ and my car runs better that when i got it 75K ago.

This should be the correct list of plugs for your car. Don't use anything but OEM, NGK or Denso (I prefer Denso)

Denso Iridium IK20
Denso PK20TR11
NGK IFR6T11
NGK BKR6EKPB-11

slpr1mz, are you saying that it is possible to remove the air intake plenum (i.e. the upper air intake chamber ) without removing the throttle body ? Do you have to remove 4 horizontal bolts that connect the throttle body to the air intake plenum ? This will be great if it works. The Haynes manual has instructions on how to remove the air intake plenum with the throttle body attached to it ( as one unit). But you have to disconnect a dozen hoses from the throttle body first.

NGK Iridium-IX is my fave. The Gen 4 uses the stupid waste spark system, so you can NOT use iridium plugs with platinum ground pads, such as the 120K-mile NGK Laser Iridium. Check rockauto.com for prices. You should have just 3 wires going to the rear bank. The fronts are coils-on-plugs, so the manifold doesn't need to come off. If you've done this before then shouldn't take more than 30 minutes working slow.

Do a drain/refill of the ATF/differential. Fluid level accuracy is important. Make sure the ATF is between HOT marks at operating temp. Measure what you drain out and add that back.

Check the eCatalog on:

Perhaps I am a little bit late, but i can tell you for personal experience, that it΄s possible to change the spark plugs of the rear bank without taking out the air intake plenum.

With the help of a magnetic finger and less than 1 hour, you can do the work. I did it ,about 6 months a go in my 1997 1MZ Gen 4.
