Can't move my shifter out of P. Camry 94 LE 4 cyl

I cannot move my shifter out of Park. The car starts fine but the shifter knob that needs to be pressed to move the shifter out of P, is not depressing fully.

Anyone has any ideas how to fix this issue?

That happened to me when the Brake fuse blew, so you could quickly check that.

I dont know how to fix it, but if you have to move the car you can override the shifter. Your manual will say to look for the raised cover on the shifter (above the ECT button) and while over riding the shifter with a screw driver, you can move the shifter into drive. However, if you try this be sure to firmly hold the brake down.

hope this helps, best of luck.

I found the brake fuse which is 15 A and is labelled as STOP fuse. This fuse is located in the dash on the left side of the steering. The fuse was blown, replaced it with a spare from the underhood fuse box. And it worked. Now I can shift the shifter out of Park easily.....

Thanks to all of you who suggested the solution...

Hmmm...that would be an interesting way of securing the vehicle from being stolen. Just pull the STOP fuse or wire in a toggle switch.

hehe rather than using The Club or the AutoLock, remove the fuse and put it in your wallet. thief can't drive your car away.

but you can override this by removing the small cap by the shifter and pressing that button to shift out of park. the only problem with this is the tail lights wont work, but the car can still easily be driven.

One could remove that override button.

Either way...how many car thieves would know the override button is there?

Nice suggestion on pulling the EFI fuse...but wouldn't that erase the learned fuel maps?

All stored trouble / fault codes will be erased in the ECM.
FUel pump relay will not function -> No fuel pressure.

Many car thieves, including repo services know that.....
