3VZ-FE bad noise up top
Hi all,
I'm new here, made my intro in the intro forum.
I'm wondering if there is a common failure in the 3VZ FE that will cause horrific noise from the cam cover area?
I've removed the cover and ran it for a delightful oil bath courtesy of the cam gears and did not witness anything obviously damaged. All the buckets are against the cams and no flat lobes or abnormal wear. Valve timing is spot on.
Removing, dismantling the oil filter reveals no bearing material but a fair amount of metal(steel)in very small pieces. I'm near certain there is no rod knock but it is as loud as any rod knock I've witnessed.
It runs smooth and doesn't smoke.
Compression was down a bit on the front center cylinder(#4?)but not drastically.
My suspicion is the #4 intake lifter/bucket,cam follower has destroyed itself inside.
Any thoughts from those in the know?
I either commit to more labor to tear it down or bail out of it on the cheap. My instinct is to cut and run but I'd sure like to know what this problem is.
EDIT; Shame on me. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's a duck, or rod knock as this has proven to be. It was so bad the sound traveled enough to deceive me. The PO must have driven it a very long time in this condition and likely even changed the oil as no bearing material was present in the filter.
