4th Generation Egr problems P0401 and P0402

Hey everyone I finally have my engine running with 64 rebuilt miles and yesterday I got a check engine light for the egr. So I went to autozone where it gave me to little flow in egr and too much flow in egr. I checked the vacuum modulator and it did blow out air out of that one hole. I need to know where to find a vacuum pump for the egr so I can check that also. The car runs excellent except at idle ill see the idle dance around ever so slightly like its unsure where to sit. The egr valve on the car is old but I cleaned it real good before putting it on the car. I would like to know what else I should try so that I can get this fixed in order to pass emissions. The engine is a 5sfe.

the egr new? used?

you double check the vacuum lines? make sure what vac line goes where (with service manual)

you check / clean the iac?

might as well check / clean the TB since you'll be in the same area

there was a similar problem as you described on another thread here (TN) cant remember the thread name

The Vacuum Switching Valve for the EGR is located on the backside of the engine, below the fuel injectors. There are at least two write-ups here on replacing it. If you do a search you should be able to find one.

So you believe its the vsv? And what size is the vacuum egr tubing for the whole system I'm wondering if the are holes in the vacuum lines.

You can borrow a MityVac from Autozone's free loaner tool program.

First thing is to measure the vacuum at the EGR valve. Basically plug the MityVac into the hose coming from the Modulator/VSV and you shouldn't have any vacuum at idle. And if you increase RPM to 2500 then you should see light vacuum at the valve.

Also, if you pull vacuum on the EGR valve, the engine should idle rough or even stall.

I would double check the hose connections on the modulator and to the throttle body.

i would replace all vacuum hoses with new metric ones cheap at Hong Kong ebay (1 meter / 3ft minimum order per size) hehe ... all rubber hoses are recommended to be replaced every 6 years, especially the ones around the engine (i mean they get HOT really whenever you drive).

also, replacing VSV for EGR is a bitch, I ended up going to local shop and paying $90 labor for replacement (my own new part). what makes you think it's the VSV fault ?
do you have any vacuum leaks?

as per EGR valve, it might need cleaning, there is a DIY here on it in sticky section, but i have to warn you that Toyota used cheap quality bolts to exhaust pipe at the factory, so they might get broken, and if that happens ... well you will see.

Whats the exact size of the hoses and I cleaned the egr before I put it on after rebuilding the engine.
