3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Kinda wondering if all camry's in the 90's with a 2.2FL engine has the same problem i have which is bad acceleration either while driving or at a dead stop. Not that i want to burn out, however id like to keep up with traffic and i get trail gated alot,Ive seen other posts regarding camrys with horrible acceleration, even with the v6.
Would sea form with every fill up help after awhile?
yeah is def slow at starting up i have da same problem just think the car has too much torque n not alot of acceleration... correct me if im wrong thats wat i think

These cars do not have too much torque. They don't have enough, well not enough for amazing acceleration.
Torque is what gets a car moving. More torque = faster acceleration.

i would say there is something wrong with your cammy... however i did full minor tune up and still going through major tune up on mine and hell still can't do the burn out when going straight ahaha! but i don't do that ever if mods ask - because my car can't
i thought it might be an automatic tranny issue actually and yeah i get tail gated often too if i try driving nice & easy (for better MPG). my car accelerates not bad on highway, but it's still terrible from a dead stop, though my ride has a problem with lean idle condition still. hoping once i get that sorted out, it would heal the acceleration from idle problem.

I get 0 to 100 kph in 9.8 to 10 seconds. That's pretty slow compared to the ones that I've driven before - V8s, STIs, Evos, etc. There was one time a tailgater kept on blowing her horn when I was doing 55 kph on a 50 kph zone and when we stopped at a roundabout, I just pushed it hard on 1st gear to smoke the right wheel. It wasn't fun but it was a way of telling, "thou shalt not tailgate on NZ roads." I was using 15" wheels then.

i just installed cold air intake and it has picked up some HP for sure, and i hardly ever use the ac anymore now knowing it takes about 20 or more HP from the already slowness. Also it accels better at night then during the day from what ive noticed.
I once had a 93 ford escort that had a 88 HP Rating and it could smoke my camry in the dust. Thats why its weird with 125HP this thing is slower then dirt.
Anyway thanks all for the fast reply's
I still love my Camry and would never give her up, im going to invest for style, not for speed.

*sorry for double post, prev post was meant for another thread*
mine's a bit sluggish lately, but that's from the lack of a front bank o2 sensor
Trust me though, you DON't want to do burnouts; I tried once, and got a case of the most retarded throttle hop ever (like riding a jackhammer/ motorized pogo-stick)

Need performance parts?
Shoot me a PM, I'll see what I can do

My stock 96 I4 Camry isn't that slow... It's not exactly full of torque and HP, but with mine, I have enough get-up and go. For your Camry to be that slow, there must be an issue with it somewhere. You most likely need a tune-up, Seafoam in the brake booster line, throttle-body cleaning, and fuel injector cleaner in the tank (or Seafoam). It's either this, your engine has low compression, you may have a HG leak (smoke from the tailpipe upon acceleration), an exhaust leak, or a leak in the vacuum hosing somewhere (or crack in main air tube from TB to air filter). Also, like you have previously mentioned, having the A/C on significantly decreases engine performance. However, I keep up with this basic maintenance and my Camry drives like it's brand new.

I'm not sure how much the Escort weighs, but I'm sure it's lighter than the Camry. This may be why the Escort could smoke your Camry, however, I'd still look in to the issues I've described above. Realistically, I don't think the Escort could smoke my Camry
