3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have paperwork from when the car was new explaining that they were 24ct Gold plated emblems, with directions on how to care for the properly.
Are you serious? All that gold I sanded down?
I'd never think a camry's badges would actually be gold plated.... My guess was right - gold badges = pimp camry!
FYI - Gold costs about $1,250 per ounce. Of course plating only puts a very thin coat of material.
If I can get 2 ounces out of it it'll pay me back for most of the car! I think I remember seeing somewhere that it was a 250 dollar option? Something like that. My white Camry has them, but they will be gone soon...
Yep, it was a REAL gold plating. It's not a dealer add on, it's an option from the factory. A new set runs about $350 for a gen 3. The emblems are plastic, coated with a cheap metal (pewter?), then dunked in a tank with a gold solute. There's a positive electric current in the solution, a negative one on the emblems. The charge opposition attracts a VERY thin layer of gold to the pewter. Boom. Gold emblems.
edit: As far as the "meaning" there isn't one. Just an independent option for looks.
