99 4cyl Camry O2 Sensor wire path?

I'm trying to replace the post-cat O2 sensor in 99 Camry 4cyl, California compliant (but bought and driven in Virginia).

My Haynes manual has the wires from it coming through the wall in the center "hump", but in reality it goes through the top of the hump. I suppose I need to remove the center console with the gear shift to get to it, but can't for the life of me figure out how.

Anybody run into this before?

Thanks!

Need to remove the driver seat, then pull the carpet away from the console to get at the harness and connector. Good luck removing the old Sensor. Mine was fused to the Center pipe. In fact I wasn't even replacing my Sensor, just needed to drop the Center for exhaust work. When that pipe goes, so will the Sensor.

Right, that's what the manual says too. But the wires come through the floorboard directly underneath the center console-- not to the passenger side of the hump as you suggest-- unless I'm totally missing something. I can't get to it via the seat/pull up the carpet method. Thanks, though.

The plug is on the drivers side. Remove the drivers seat (4 bolts). just move it to the rear.
Feel for the plug along the console bottom near the floor. Peel back carpet and unplug sensor.
PB blast or Kroil the 02 sensor and warm it up before you try to unscrew it.

Thanks, but what makes you think it's on the drivers' side? Both manuals I've read say passenger side, but my direct observation is that it's coming up through the center of the vehicle.

My son has a 99 Camry 5sfe and that's how we changed it. I use the Toyota FSM's with updates for reference and Toyota Service News for techniques. Good Luck it's not difficult.

manuals are WRONG. including toyota factory service manual, trust me, i've been to there. the grommet you are looking for is under the driver's seat (at center console). once you remove the seat and peel the carpet off from beneath the console plastic trims, you WILL see the grommet. sensor's plug is directly under the driver's seat. you can access it through opening in carpet, i chose a blatant way and cut the carpet a little so i could in fact see it as i don't like working on thing i can't see.

Well, you guys were right. The sucker comes in on the driver's side... I suppose this means that the Japanese translator got his Driver and Passenger words mixed up. Start to finish: 30 minutes, including looking for my lost socket set.

Getting the old O2 sensor out was a piece of cake once I heated the base of it up and squirted a bit of WD-40. Just snaked the disconnected cable through the closed end of a 22mm box wrench and used that. Came right out, didn't break a sweat the whole time.

Thanks to all!!!!

Just another trick I learned to make this job even easier. After you disconect the sensor from inside the passenger compartment of the car, tie a piece of twine or thick string to the electrical connector on the O2 side. Then pull it through from underneath the car. Leave about a foot of string inside the car. Once out, attach the string to the electical connector of the new O2 sensor. Now go back in to the car and pull it back through to the passenger compartment. There's no need to do any fishing this way.

All of the ones that I have replaced can be accessed from behind the seat without removing it, but all of those had the alarm under the seat, and a slice in the carpet already for the alarm wiring. For those how find this thread later, check for the alarm box under the seat first, it's the easy way out.

I can't remember what years have it, but they did run the wire on the passenger side in front of the center console, it was a much better place imo, just pull the carpet back and unplug it, but I kind like the one on my 96, right below the cat under the hood, with both plugs side by side :P
