P0302

Hello All,

Happy 4th of July to all. I recently just got another CEL light. This time it's a P0302. Last CEL was a P0300. That cleared up after I replaced the wires and plugs. But for some reason the P0302 popped up. Could this be a coil problem?

Thanks

no coil problem (if you have 4 cylinder car). coils/igniters on 5s-fe serve 2 cylinders at same time (1+4 & 3+2). spark plug problem maybe ? pull plugs out and pay attention to how plug in cylinder #2 (counting from left or timing belt side as first) looks like compared to others.

also make sure that new wires "clicked" on all and both ends.

if that doesn't answer the question, i would do a compression test on engine to see if cylinder #2 compression doesn't fall out of +/-14psi range of others.

Thanks for helping me rule out the coil. Plug wires is secure. When I get the chance I will check to see what color the plug is compared to the others. Hopefully it's not compression. But will do that next.

It can also be a problem with the fuel injector for that cylinder, although missfire codes are most often caused by faulty ignition system components. How old are the "new" plug wires on this car? I have seen aftermarket wires fail in as little as 1 year or 20,000 miles. You also don't mention the current mileage on the car and how long in age and mileage the plug wires have been installed on the car.

Plugs and wires were replaced about 2 months ago. Car has about 110K. Also note that the car had a P0300 and a P0301, P0302 code before I changed the plugs and wires. After the plugs and wires were changed no codes showed up until now (P0302). Thanks

I would check that number 2 spark plug wire for resistance. Don't be surprised if you find an open circuit. It's not impossible to have a bad plug wire, even if it is new.

i think the fact that you had P0301 and P0302 together with P0300 might mean something. 1st & 2nd cylinder are NOT served by the same igniter. as suggested above, double check that all plugs look normal (and same) and also (per Mike's posts) measure the resistance of your new plug wires, just to be sure ... if i'm not wrong it should be around 25Kohm (or whatever same on all).

i'd stick to doing the compression test next. it may reveal a compression problems on mentioned cylinders.

if you have obd2 scanner (which allows you to see fuel trims) I would also do a fuel injector balance test which basically requires you to unplug each injector electrical connector on running engine (one at a time with around 1 minute time for system to stabilize) and noting down the ECM fuel trims. ECM will not compensate for a fuel injector (unplugged) which was already compensated for or you will notice minimal fuel trim adjustment (+) after unplugging the dirty one.
it may point out a clogged/dirty injector(s) on mentioned cylinders.

alternatively you can try adding Chevron Techron (24oz per 18gallon tank should do it) and resetting ECM. if problems do not come back then good for you, if they come back after next fill up then you have narrowed it down to the fuel system (e.g. dirty injectors).

BTW, when was the fuel filter last changed ?
