3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently changed my AC/Alt belt and it's squeaking like crazy especially when you rev the engine. All of the bolts are super tight but the belt that I bought has the ridges in the horizontal direction opposite of the pulley's vertical direction. Could this be the source of the squeaking?
i believe you've got some other kind of belt (sounds like timing belt to be honest)... all of accessory belts i know have ridges along the belt's edge ("vertical") so they fit exactly the pulleys grooves... otherwise the belt slips no matter how hard you tighten it ... also over-tightening may cause it snaps prematurely (even tomorrow) and it puts additional strain on all accessories' pulleys powered by such belt (they have to fight the extra tension).
i would replace it asap with either Good Year (this one IS an OEM brand for P/S on some models), Gates (good reliable aftermarket choice, can't go wrong) or Toyota OEM a/c belts (e.g. Bando, Mitsuboshi, Dayco etc. are OEM brands with Toyota logos on it).
don't risk loosing the bearing in your pulleys driven by a/c belt, replace it asap.

Where did you get the belt, where is it made? The belts I got last time came with a timing belt kit, they were the same style, a horizontal ridged belt. They both squeaked as soon as I put them in, and worse kept stretching over time. I got tired of tightening them and purchased belts from Toyota, the problem instantly went away. They are expensive but last a very long time. When I bought my 93 it has original Toyota belts with 110,000 miles, and the belts were still in reasonable condition although the PS belt was cracking.
I also like to clean the pulleys with acetone and a tooth brush (harsh stuff be careful with it) it removes all traces of oil and contaminates. Ordinary alcohol will also work, or brake part cleaner.
Actually its just like a timing belt but it has little "dips" i guess for the pulley to feed through. I got it from NAPA . Anyone have experience with such belts?

What brand is the belt? Take fenixus's advise and get one of the belts he mentions. I like the Mitsuboshi brand ones, but mostly because I've have great luck with them, I'm sure other brands are equally good.
it looks odd ... Power-fit ? WTF ? i never heard of this technology of belt producing, but honestly i think it's incompatible. they say it was designed for micro-V pulleys, while ours are poly-V (if it makes any difference, idk honestly) ... and 6 ridges (where ? on horizontal ribs ?) ?
geeez, for that price (shipping excluded) you could get an OEM belt from dealer ... e.g. www.toyotapartsoutlet.com ($4.99 shipping now, no taxes). i got mine at $14 from them (was shipping free back then)...

Those look almost exactly the same as the piece of crap belts I had. Here is the image for people that don't feel like selecting location etc. on that site.
dayco is one of the best OEM belt manufacturers for Toyota
you can get it also from autozone ($22) or get OEM belt form dealer - though recently i purchased it and got Bando (had no luck and didn't get Mitsuboshi i was hoping for) hehe

Bando, that's who made the belts I had. Very poor. Don't know if all Bando stuff is bad, but those were useless. An old piece of leather glued together would probably last longer.

I gave them away.
LOL! thanks for opinion it's still way better than my noname aftermarket alternator belt i had since winter (stretched by an inch over new one by the time of replacement 2 months ago)... if my oem/bando goes bad i will just pick up dayco from autozone or gates from napa
