noticed something new today - knocking?

Ok heres one I noticed, seems to only sound when I start the car cold, is the sound of knocking for about 60 seconds normal? Would this just be spark knock? I heard that some vehicles when cold produce spark knock.

So this "knocking" sound just appeared today? You've never heard it before today? Is the "knocking" sound very loud for a full 60 seconds, then suddenlly goes away? Or is it loud at the beginning and fades out until you don't notice it after 60 seconds? What is your oil pressure warning light doing during the time you are hearing the "knocking" sound (it the light on or out)? How long after you start the car cold does it take for you oil pressure light to turn off?

Knocking sound is something that is pretty loud & solid sounding. It that what you are hearing, or are you hearing more of a ticking sound?

^^ Agreed - - - need those answers.

Also, turn off ALL accessories, lights, heat, AC, wipers; then start car and listen. You could also raise the hood and stick a stethoscope to the valve train and block area. DO this warm and cold listening about for differnet sounds. A wood broom handle or long screw driver works to. Place them right in your ear.

What oil wt is in it, how old is it, how, many miles (oil and engine) and what'st the outside temp?

i do believe the car has always done it however its really been bothering me so I thought id get a 2nd opinion. I had a 93 chevy did the same thing.
This knocking starts only on cold starts, its about 110 degrees out, oil is good. all accessories off. and it does not always last a full 60 seconds its random, could be for 20 - 60 seconds and then the knocking stops.
thats why I really think its spark knock, but then again this is not a chevy.

Next oil change cut the old filter apart and look for bad things in the element {hacksaw}. Clean your drain pan to be spotless and drop the oil pooring the used oil into container. Now sift through the bottom of the pan. If it's loosing a bearing it should show it in the oil and filter.

don't forget the noise check with a stick. You CAN isolate noises by doing this. Cam speed is 1/2 half crank speed but wrist pin knocks can be either depending how loose the pin & bushing are.

ha, whats funny is when i bought the car i installed a mobile 1 oil filter which are one of the best filters on the market, soon after i took it to a shop to get all the front end seals replaced due to leaking, when I got the car back i noticed they took my brand new oil filter off and replaced it with a cheap one. I wasnt that pissed just laughed anyways, yeah im gonna change it back to a Mobile 1 part no. M1-103
