Next problem shaking/suttering issue

Ok I am having some trouble with my 97 camry, it had the check engine light go on code P0770 witch seems to be the shift solenoid E, i am a little confused as to where this solenoid is, Is it on the valve body front or rear or on the top of the trans? Here is what the car is doing it shakes/sutters pretty bad and makes the engine die sometimes. it shifts from 1st to 2nd find but as it tries for third it starts to shake and shutter bad. What could this be torque converter or the shift solenoid E, I tested it by removing it and applying voltage and it seems to click fine? Any ideas, I was told I need a new trans? But I just want to be sure, there wasnt a bunsh of metal shivings in the pan or anything like you think you would get if the whole trans went out? Any suggestions. Thanks

The shuttering from the trans sounds as if the lock up part of the torque converter has failed. Think of the lock up (l/u) clutch in an auto is the same as a stick shifts clutch but it only comes on in 3rd and 4th when the brakes are off and the speed is above 38 or so. Once the clutch material is gone it doesn't report as fully engauged to the ECM because the clutch is slipping. Actually the ECM looks at the crank speed sensor and compares it to the final drive speed/drum speed. They should be nearly equal when in l/u. If not, it reports an P0770 error.

Look at the theard with P0773 in the last day. It has some good info in it.
The Dreaded P0773 Plague

Also try this, take off in low, allow it to hit 2nd, now very gently apply the brake but not enough to slow the car. It should go into 3rd gear about 25mph but NOT allow l/u. Continue to speed up to 45. Does it still shudder/shutter?

Meaning it could be ECM/electrical related and not just the t/c but we need more info.

FWIW: the longer it does this, the more damage it does.

Ok so the fluid did not smell burnt, was a little dirty but not bad. I have drained it and took the pan off to check the VB solenoids, both seem to click open and closed and have as a resistance of 13.2 and 13.0, so they look good there, but then I applied comp. air to the end and they both leak, then with air still goin I put voltage to it and it opened up and there was more air coming out? so do you think they are bad? Should I put it all back together and try to drive it with the trans elec. unpluged? to try and see if its an elec. or mechanical problem? and also do what 73sport said to try? I just dont want to do any more harm to it you know. thanks

Sounds like the solenoids are bad but I never looked to see if what you did was a valid test.

Take a look here in the section applicable to the auto trans. They show you how to test each part. Save it to your drive, the search will work faster.
