fast idle cam/ IAC valve 3rd gen v6

I have a 3rd gen 96 v6 1mz-fe engine with a fast idle/idle control problem. [Actually I have a 96 es300, but there are people here that can help and its the same engine anyway.]

Sometimes when I go to start, my engine starts up and then dies instantly.

It will not maintain RPM for a cold start. If I gas it to about 2k rpm and hold it for a few minutes until the engine warms, then I can drive off and it operate normally. Sometimes if this is happening, ill let it warm for a few minutes, turn engine off, then turn it back on it and will maintain the proper RPM at idle.

This problem is sporadic and doesnt happen frequently. It started several months ago out of the blue, but now happens about once a week or so, so I want to try and replace whatever it is that needs replacing.


My car has 3 coil packs on the front/left bank, with secondary wires that connect from these 3 coil packs.

Im not sure where the problem is. Obviously there is no fast idle cam, since there is no carb, but this is a fast idle/ idle control problem.

I need help of where to look/diagnose and what to replace.

96 1mz fe engine with 183k miles.
