3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My '97 has a stripped reclining gear, it holds unless I lean back too hard, but it's only a matter of time before it starts reclining on its own. It's also clearly unsafe, if I was rear-ended it would fold like a cheap suit.
Anyway, I'm guessing the plastic gear in the reclining mechanism is shot. Is there a way to replace just that gear? Is it a DIY job?
Or, is it possible I could find a used beige front driver seat (non-power) from a Gen 4? What are the odds of that, and, what might it cost?
TIA,
-kj-
EDIT: just found http://www.automotix.net/ and they appear to be a source for used seats ... should I go with a 1997 seat or a 2001? Are they the same design? I'd get the newer one in the hopes it would be in better condition but maybe it would not matter...thoughts? I could also call some local junkyards, maybe I'd get lucky...
Hi does anyone know if there are any differences between the seats for a 1997 Camry vs. a 2001? I would like to get seats out of a 2001 if possible, I'm guessing they will fit fine, but, am wondering about styling or other aesthetic differences ... anyone? I'm only replacing the driver side front sear. TIA!
2001 probably has electric seats which you probably don't have the wiring harness for.
Actually, I specifically looked for a manual seat, and that's what I got, the only connector on it was the one I needed, presumably for the seat belt indicator. Everything's installed and looking great, even if the shade of the seat is just a tiny bit different from the rest of the interior ... lol ... to be expected, I guess!
Nice! Glad you found it! I bet other people won't even notice the difference, haha only you.
hahaha well my elation was short lived, my daughter gets in the car and she's like "hey your seat is different than the others" and sure enough, the beige cloth in a 2001 is verrrrrrry slightly different than the 1997, the latter has some colored "threads" intermixed, the former is all beige but with a very subtle pattern of lighter and darker brown ... too funny ... I'm fine with it though, I'd rather have a seat 4 years newer that is off just a teeny bit than one that matches perfectly and is more worn. Oh well live and learn!
Yea. There's a noticable difference with the 97~99 to the 00~01 Camry seats. I noticed that the earlier gen has more softer and has this texture design VS the later which has a more plain and harder design.

Well, I wish I'd heard that before I ordered, lol! I actually asked that very question in here but it must have gotten past you. No worries...
