Well,...I have the 92 so it may be different....I think the change interval is 15k. (Replace or "inspect" depending on which service schedule...severe or light duty) (just look in your glovebox manual)

I just changed my fluid along with a two gallon flush & new filter, at 144K. I think it was last replaced w/filter at somewhere between 50-70K.

...The filter looked fine and there wasn't much in the pan to clean....but the fluid looked really "brown"... & I'm sure it needed changing!

Sooo...on my 1992 there is a drain plug on the tranny pan (not sure about your 02)... I probably would have been fine with just a drain & replace...and not bother with the filter!....
But I feel better changing both..
(I re-used my old gasket, left it stuck to the pan & just put a light coat of RTV to the tranny side, BUT...it was in good shape & some sort of rubber quality gasket from the last change)...

That's my experience anyway!

>>>>OH YEA.... DON"T forget your differential....seems like nobody ever checked mine..... It looked black & terrible,... and it was down by over HALF of its capacity !!!! (So I filled & drained it a few times to flush it out too!)

....

I do mine whenever it starts to lose its pink color. And yes, if you're doing the fluid, I'd recommend you also do the strainer (filter) and gasket. I've done it on my 96 5SFE and it's pretty easy. I've never used special adhesive for sealing this particular gasket, but it wouldn't hurt nonetheless.

Same here, when the fluid starts turning a color other than red or bright pink, and when it starts to have a burnt odor to it. But I always do the flush to get all the old stuff out, rather than a drain that gets about 25-30 percent out.

The frequency for me ends up being somewhere between 30k to 50k miles (2-3 years).

Toyota recommends Dexron ATF. There is a new Dexron ATF out now (Dextron 6), which is fully synthetic. If you ask for that with a full flush, you should see your ATF hold its color and not develop any kind of burnt smell to it for a bit longer.

Ehhh...rather than edit my post & have someone miss it...

Just wanted to say I made a typo on the miles between changes.... it should say that MY car has 114K miles on it,... (not 144K miles!)
...and I found really brown ... yucky oil!

....So that would be at only ONLY 40k, or to the most, 65K on the tranny fluid!

(And I'm pretty sure it is only about 40k since the last change! One of these days I dig thru my files & find the paperwork....)

So I just want to point out these Toys aren't like American cars that will go for just about forever with out a trans fluid change!!!!

According to my shop manual, unlike the engine oil pan (which recommends the use of FIPG), the transmission pan needs to have a new gasket, then just bolt up the pan to the housing and torque the bolts (43 in-lbs).
